Ethncity?

Hi,
I'm an int'l student living in the Netherlands and I'm a little confused about what I should put as my ethnicity. I'm actually 75% Kurdish and 25% Turkish. My parents and grandparents came to the Netherlands as immigrants. So could I state Turkish/Kurdish as an ethnicity, or would I be considered Arab or Middle Eastern?
And would this qualify me for being a URM?
Thanks :)

No ,it does not qualify you. Sorry.

Then which ethnicities would be URMs? Hispanics and Native Americans?

You are white. There is no "Middle Eastern" option under the race/ethnicity category. URMs are Hispanics, Native Americans, African Americans, and Asians at some private LACs. Internationals are considered for admission under an entirely different level, and unfortunately it's considerably more difficult for international applicants to gain admission. So I suggest that you increase your chances by playing the diversity factor based on what you know (i.e. being a citizen of and growing up in the Netherlands) rather than on the ambiguity surrounding your ethnicity.

Just what the term implies ...any underrepresented minority

Being international is a selling point in itself. A lot of schools are trying to increase international numbers, especially after setbacks of 9/11.

You have a rich culture and heritage. You bring something unique to a campus.

Well.. everyone brings something unique...you just have to figure out what makes YOU unique.

Ruella, Internationals are actually quite desirable. A big roadblock is their ability to pay. You must fill out a declaration of finances to apply for US colleges. You must be able to meet tuition and fees, in conjunction with merit aid offered by your school. Some private schools also have private need-based grants available.

Yes, I am actually thinking of applying ED to Columbia and I think I would qualify for need. The only problem is that they probably give less to internationals. However, I have seen a list of how much universities gave to internationals and with Columbia it was 30k average. I think that would be good enough for me.
And I don't really think I'd be white. I do have a somewhat dark skin color. I kind of look like a Mexican or Puerto Rican.
And about ethnicity..your ethnicity doesn't h
