Which would be better to list myself as Asian (Taiwanese) or to leave it as blank? (my last name is obviously Chinese)

leave it blank and try to legally get your name changed

yeah...they're probably gonna know from your last name anyway...might as well be proud of who you are...

Then again, your name might be conscientiously withheld from the ad-coms...

Some claim one suprisingly successful option is to change your name to "Not Applicable"

Rock stars like Prince get away it with dramatic name changes, so students s/b no different

If an African-American lists himself as Prefer not to answer, how can they tell he is not white since their last names are the same?

And there are Jews with Chinese last names... Jews who immigrated to China hundreds of years ago and were assigned Chinese last names by the Emperor such as "Li." How would they tell the difference?

AND what about Asians who were adopted by white folks... they have last names like "Dawson."

Bah... I'm just ranting about how unfair and discriminatory these college admission practices are...

DON'T leave it blank.
I saw statistics that clearly show that people who leave their ethnicity blank have a dissadvantage. I don't have them at hand, but it had percentages of people accepted to a number of selective schools and the % of accepted people who left it blank was like 6%.
Besides, as others have pointed out, your last name will give you away.
