Ethnicity...does it really mean anything in the application process

I keep reading in various posts how many applicants had an advantage because of their ethnicity. From the research I've done it seems that schools do not favor an applicant simply because of their ethnicity. I feel that the admissions process is pretty fair, and even though people with lower stats than you may get in to a college it is not because they are a minority but instead because they can offer an interesting perspective to the school.

Although this is a broad topic that applies to many other schools other than rice i am interested in hearing the views of applicants and current students at rice.
