I am going to be filling out college apps this fall and I am wondering what ethnicity I would mark. My mother is Hispanic and my father is native american with an Irish last name. My grandfather is 1/8 registered tribal member but that would put me at 1/32, which seems more watered down. However, in the past, I have attended tribal functions with my family and grandfather because my family has tried to keep me involved in traditions of the tribe. Could I safely note on my application that I am American Indian?

Mark with whatever you identify.

And people mocked Elizabeth Warren for 1/16…

If you have to ask if you can mark “American Indian” then you are not culturally native american. NA is the one race that may have a requirement test. Some colleges require you to be a registered tribe member to qualify.

Yes your right “Erin’s Dad”, many years ago, my dad tried to register but they changed the qualifications to minimum 1/8 so he could not register, and I have been noticing in most scholarships requirements are of that or more. It guess it would be safe for me not to go there even though I feel a connection. I can choose Hispanic since that is the other part of my ethnicity. Thank you all for your input.

For native American, see what each college lists for criteria. While some may accept only tribally enrolled people as such, others may be more lenient. For example, this tuition waiver allows any descendent of a tribally verified person to use it: http://www.morris.umn.edu/financialaid/scholarshipswaivers/americanindiantuition/

wow, thank you “ucbalumnus” for the post…most helpful!
