Ethnicity - Minority?

This is a very specific question and this is the most general forum I found. So I will ask this question here.

Does being Armenian count as being a minority? Armenians are considered Caucasian so my thought is that they would not be considered a minority. But on the other hand, there are only like 500k Armenians in the US (wikipedia).

The reason I'm asking this is because I heard that Columbia is really big on the whole "diversity" thing. Would an Armenian be "diverse" enough?

Thank you for your opinions!

It’s fine to emphasize your heritage. But wondering if it’ll be the unique factor (which all successful candidates possess) is pointless. It’ll depend on your readers that day. But I highly doubt anyone will say “Oh look! An Armenian applicant!”. Hopefully, they’ll be impressed with you overall and just remember that you were Armenian. It could be the sticking point in their memory – and that’s good. It’s akin to some other applicant who rose to be an assistant manager of a Burger King. If she’s a strong candidate, for discussions sake, she may be referred to as the Burger King manager. Does this make sense? If you’re not otherwise memorable due to the rest of your package, you’ll be rejected.

But as to being an “under represented minority” in the context of college admissions, you’re not.

Good luck to you.
