Ethnicity question on app

Is the ethnicity background part of the application based on what you consider yourself or what you technically are?

My mother is Latin American and my father is from India. I have been to my mother's hometown and visted family there on many occasions. I speak spanish at home with her. But I have never been to India, nor do I (or we) participate in traditional Indian functions (family friend things). I would say that I consider myself to be hispanic but can I just leave it at that on the application or must I also put South Asian because my father's birthplace will be on the app?

Ethnicity is what you identify with. Anthropologically, you are Hispanic, and you can justify it. Its not a big stretch at all. I'd go just Hispanic. Some ppl will probably say "ooooh no, you can't," but you can.

and since Latin Americans are very likely to have indian blood in them, you might as well check the Native American box too

^ I would be careful with that, if Stanfurd asks for documentation...they need proof that you're at least 1/8 I think.

^ yea dats true. You gotta have this certificate thing they give out to Native Americans.

just check both...multiple racial backgrounds contributes to the diversity stats of a school...you'd be all set as far as affirmative action is concerned.

You are kidding, right?

I have not heard of any other ethnic/racial claimant needing to provide proof in the form of certificates.
