I am part Native American, but I am not quite half. I still feel a strong tie to the roots from which I have come, however. If I have a higher percentage Caucasian than I do of my Native American heritage, does that require that I register as such? If not, what fraction would I need to be to be able to claim my Native American ethnicity.
Thanks :)

I think you are fine saying you are American Indian - you are greater than 1/4 American Indian? No problem.

Thank you very much. Just to clarify, 1/4th is the very least possible?

I know some people that take advantage of a 1/8th ethnic background, but in general I think 1/4th is probably the lowest percentage safe to go with. And as long as you’re that much, and identify with that heritage, definitely put down American Indian on your app.

You may be asked if you are registered with a tribe and, if so, which one.

Unfortunately, because race is often regarded as an determining factor with respect to ethnicity; culture (how NDN’s determine affiliation regardless of the BIA) is left out of the mix. If you are actively involved in your tribe (although I don’t know many ndn’s who use the term “native american”) than it is something you should discuss in your essay and be specific.
