i was wondering about ucla's ethnomusicology's program...or just the degree in ethnomusicology from any college. What are future options for those who graduate with a degree? Honestly, I'm trying to get in to the ethnomusicology simply because it's easier (admission rate, audition reqs, etc) than the regular music dept reqs...and i plan to switch majors into music ed...if i get in. But who knows? I might enjoy world music. What is the future like for a typical ethnomusicology graduate? Is it hard to switch majors? Please tell me your opinions ASAP.

UCLA's program is one of the best on the left coast. U-Dub is good too. Unless you really want to study music in its cultural context you might just want to go the music ed route.

There was an interesting forum a while back in the Parent's Forum about Paying for X-degree where I chimed in about how ethnomusicologists, among others, add interest. But yeah, don't go for it if ed is what you really want...

The two majors generally fall under distinct degree programs, ethnomusicology in the BA and music ed in the BM, so it's not only a question of changing majors. Admission criteria are different as well; the BM in music ed will almost certainly require a performance audition.

The "ed" part of a music ed program is the most important part. You should be looking at schools with strong education departments and a proven track record of job placement for graduates if you really want to teach.

at ucla, even if you are accepted as an ethno major, you will have to re-audition(with the same standards as incoming freshman) to get into the music ed program.
