ethnomusicology

I am interested in talking with anyone who is in ethnomusicology or has a kid in it. This is for one of the undergrad programs esp ucla or ucsb, wesleyan

how about someone who knows someone?

What kind of questions do you have, and what is your student’s interest? For instance, my son’s friend is in the ethno depart at UCLA but he is actually a jazz sax player. Is your student actually interested in world music as opposed to jazz? And, if so, from a particular culture, or all of them? You probably already know that UCLA and Wesleyan are at the tops in the country for ethnomusicology. I don’t know anything about UCSB’s program.

SpiritManager, I would love to hear from you more about UCLA’s Jazz and Ethnomusicology program. From looking at the website, it looks pretty innovative.

Why would your son’s friend be in the the ethno program rather than jazz?

Thanks

I know some people love world music more than jazz

Funkydrummer - he had no choice:
“Jazz Studies is a concentration within the undergraduate major in the Department of Ethnomusicology. Majors in jazz studies take private lessons, participate in combos and orchestras, and take courses in jazz history, theory, and improvisation. The presence of jazz studies within the ethnomusicology department facilitates exploration of the significant link between jazz and music traditions from around the world.”
