I recently ran across this school and am quite attracted to it. From what I read on the school's website, it seems like a very good school. I want to know what you guys think of it though... what isn't said on the schools web site. Are the academics good or overrated, are the students likable or pompous, etc...

Well, for one, its in Manhattan- which opens many doors for internships.
It would help if you said what you would like to major in/ are interested in.

It’s an unusual college.
It could be characterized as a “small liberal arts college” (LAC), and they do compare themselves on their website to schools like Reed and Swarthmore. However, it is set with an urban university (The New School). The good news is, you get some of the resources of the larger institution. The bad news is, you get some of the annoying bureaucracy that goes with it. In reality, I suspect many Lang students never take courses in other elements of the New School such as the Parsons School of Design.

Its Greenwich Village location distinguishes it from the traditional New England LACs, many of which are set in small rural towns. It also is much less selective than those schools. There is not much of a traditional campus feel; you can think of NYC as its “campus” for better or worse. The classes seem to be quite good (small, with lots of discussion).

If you want an urban LAC with a very liberal political atmosphere, then Lang would be a good complement on an application list with more selective LACs such as Macalester or Wesleyan. It is not a place for shy wallflowers who need a lot of hand-holding; it could be an excellent choice for a go-getter ready to take advantage of everything the city has to offer.

if you’re into writing/lit/ethics i think you’d be happy with the academics at lang. as far as the people, no one’s really pompous (well, some people are, but you get those everywhere), but there isn’t a strong community feel and sometimes it’s hard to meet people.

i’m super super happy with the education i’m getting there even though dealing with the bureaucracy of the new school in general can really suck. if you have any specific questions feel free to message me!
