Eugene Lang

I didn't see a thread for this under the "Colleges" section. How is this school? It's been recommended to me several times, and I think I may have a decent shot at being accepted here. Is it generous with financial aid? How are the programs there?

bump.......

Um… Who is Eugene Lang? I’ve never heard of it. I did however hear of Lang Lang, a great pianist from China. Actually, I went to Shriver Hall @JHU for his concert. His interpretation of Liszt was extraordinary :)

Eugene Lang is part of New School University in NY City. I think that a few independent smaller colleges combined to form the university.

Eugene Lang was the son of an unemployed immigrant in Harlem in the 1930s. A patron in the restaurant where he was bussing tables took a liking to him and paid his tuition at Swarthmore.

Years later, Lang was a wealthy industrialist and became a major philanthropist. He started the "I Have a Dream Foundation" by adopting an entire class of 3rd graders at his old Harlem school, mentoring them and eventually helping pay for college.

He is Swarthmore College's largest benefactor -- more than $30 million -- and also gave a huge chunk of money to the New School in NYC where the undergrad college bears his name.

OK so how is the SCHOOL?

The school is great for a very independent, mature student interested in the arts. It's not your traditional kind of college. It's "campus" is NYC.

I used to be really interested in Eugene Lang...I did some research and this was my general perception.

Majors at Eugene Lang are broader, more scopic...like literature, cultural studies, social inquiry. It always does well on the fluffy Princeton Review rankings, like "class discussion". From what I hear, I'd be great if you're a very liberal independent thinker who's into more interactive learning and discussion than lecture. Special note on liberal. I've heard that if you're not a Marxist you'll fail your classes. Alot of students are "counterculture"--hippies, hipsters, folkies, '''punks'''. It also doesn't have much of a campus.

I'd say it mixes a place like Bennington or Hampshire with Parsons or Pratt. You'd probably get a great education and then feel kinda useless after the 4 years.

i just had my interview with them today, what the above person said is true, about the students and majors. The average grade is 3.2 but grade point average isn't the first thing they look at. Its actually the third thing next to recommendations and essays.

Eugene Lang has the same "campus" as NYU, Columbia and Fordham...New York City. In fact, NYU and Eugene Lang are side by side in Greenwich Village. Intermingled, actually. My son goes to Lang and it is the prefect fit for him...so you know his "credentials" he graduated high school with a 3.5 unweighted; 4.1 weighted. He took 7 AP classes and scored 4s and 5s. Plus two college classes that he aced. He scored a 1490 on the old SAT and a 2210 on the new SAT. So, academically he is quite capable. He chose Lang because of it's seminar style rather than lecture type classes, and because Lang would allow him to combine his interest in politics, journalism and cartooning (as a high school junior he won first place in a political cartooning contest sponsored by Newsweek magazine) so, he is smart, talented, and has a strong passion for politics. He is a ferociously enthusiastic and independent learner and that's why Lang works for him. If you're looking for someone to tell you what to study, when to study, and how much to study to get the right grade, Lang is not for you. But, if you love to learn and have lots of interests, and are looking for a small school in a big city, check out Lang. By the way, he has friends at NYU who wish they were at Lang. Just another perspective

in response to above about the people at NYU wishing to go to eugene lang is totally absurd, NYU statistics are much stronger especially stern and for most people living in greenwich village in proximity to both, eugene lang is seen as a safety for them, but not in a offensive way, eugene lang is a good school but not like NYU. Also look on collegeboards statistics for Eugene Lang

ckd- did not state Lang was better or more difficult to get into then NYU just that some NYU students wished they were at Lang. The statement had more to do with the academic style at Lang vs. NYU

i really want to go to eugene lang.

what are my chances?

I am always a good participant in class discussions and socratic seminars.

Lang sounds like the school for those who consider NYU to be too structured, preppy, inhibited, professional, and close-minded. It's like the Rolls Royce for those who conside a Mercedes too much of a people's car. It's like Anna Nicole Smith for those who think Paris Hilton isn't quite slutty enough. It's like Michael Savage for those who don't think Rush Limbaugh isn't quite conservative enough. It's like living on the equator for those who think summers in Houston aren't quite hot enough.

so does that mean it is good?

Maybe it's just me...I never understood what was so Fascist about getting actual grades. I never understood the need for interdiscipliary majors (pick a frickin' major--is it that tough?). I don't think it destroys the Ozone Layer to have an actual campus. Have a burger. Don't smoke cigarettes. Budweiser instead of coke. Buy clothes that actually fit. You look just fine with one piercing in each ear...getting 10 more in the left ear and 6 more in the right isn't going make anybody like you any more. Tattoos all say the same thing: I'm not very interesting.

woah someone should lay off the budwieser ;)

Well, Paris is pretty slutty.

What's their financial aid like? My family's annual income is about 16,500 on average.

I was referring to the learning style not whether NYU is harder or easier to get in than Lang -- I suspect it's harder to get into NYU, but that doesn't make it better or worse -- and, for clarity, I said they share a campus...Greenwhich Village in NYC, which they do. Lang students do get actual grades, and multidiscplinary is increasingly the way to be successful in a multicultural, mulitnational, multilingual, culture/economy, so I wouldn't diss students who prefer to prusue multiple interests.

mycrazyhazeleyes- you would very likely get in to Eugene Lang with those kind of stats. What will also help you is if you write good essays and your teacher recs highlight your talent in socratic/in-class discussions.
