Does anybody know of any good textbooks for European History? I am independent studying it next year Thanks alot.

A History of A Western Society by:McKay

---I used it this year, and my teacher made Montgomer County, and the state of Maryland switch to this text book.
-----Duke and Northwestern also use it

the western heritage by kagan
awesome book...actually really enjoyed reading it
tons of detail but none of it extraneous
got me a 5 on the ap!

i used mckay and it's a great book, but the mckay test bank has questions on ridiculously minute details

if you use mckay, read every chapter twice

mckay is good but boring IMO

"A History of the Modern World" by Palmer

Not only did I personally love Modern European History (by Birdsall Viault), upon seeing it, all of my friends went out and got it too! It got to the point where nobody in the AP Euro class was reading the real textbook, just this. I'd still be carefull if this is all you're using to prepare, though. Be sure you're solid on themes, and on post-WW2 (the book tails off after the war and is hazy about the Thatcher Revolution, postwar governments, etc).

so a textbook is not really useful?

My class used McKay, and it was good and prepped me pretty well for the exam, though it's a bit boring. I would highly recommend Modern European History by Viault though, that book explains everything just as well as McKay and makes for a better read.

I'm bummed to learn that my AP history 5s don't mean squat at Stanford...

maybe you should have taken some more aps. to impress stanford...
