European-US university transfer: My difficult situation

Hi, My name is Ale and i just finished my first year at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. I was born and raised in New York, and my high school grades did not get me in to the best colleges in the US since i was aiming high. I chose to come to Bocconi because it is regarded as the best university in Italy and on of the top Business schools in Europe.

However, its an old fashion school and the system is horrible. no papers, no projects no assignments. everything is just jammed up in to one huge exam for all the material studied throughout the semester. I don't believe it brings out the best in a students real potential. not to mention the grading is very strict and there is absolutely to way to interact with the professors and all the classes have 200 students in it. This whole year i studies my ass off and iv passed only 2 classes out of 8! Introduction to management (12 credits) and economic history (5 credits). thats a total of 17 credits. the problem is i needed at least 24 credits to register as a second year student. therefore my only option is to re-register as a first year student and take all the classes i haven't passed again. unfortunately i realized this wasn't the place for me just now. so if i have any way of going back to the US i must do it within deadlines for spring semester 2010 or fall semester 2010.

What should i do?! should i just suck it up and finish here at bocconi? if i decide to leave can i apply as a transfer student from another university or do i apply as a first year candidate? i ask this because i don't have the required classes for an american university. will it look bad on my application that im still a first year student? can i still transfer the credits from the classes i passed to suit an american university?

would it look better to re-register as first year for the fall semester and pass a few more classes and apply for spring semester transfer or should i just get an internship next semester and apply for spring? if i do drop out and get an internship can i still apply as a transfer student?

im in a difficult situation guys! cus im not a bad student, i study! and when i think i had the option of choosing to go to providence college or rollins college and even baruch i just want to rip my hair out.

im looking for the best solution. the one that will make my application look the best, and get me started at a new school as soon as possible. because i could have gotten my bocconi degree in 2011 since its only a 3 year program. but i don't wanna have to start college 1st year in 2010 and get out in 2014!!!

you could take summer classes, or return the the US and enroll in a community college for the fall. :)

Contact the community colleges and SUNY campuses nearest your home in New York. Speak directly with the admissions officers. Since you have earned very few credits, you may be considered a freshman applicant. Each institution may have slightly different rules about this.

You should be able to be admitted to a community college for this fall. Some of the SUNY campuses may still have room as well. You also could contact any college or university that accepted you last year, but that you turned down for Bocconi, to see if they have space for the fall.

Wishing you all the best.

thanks i appreciate it. Colleges that accepted me last year would take me again if they have room, without having to apply again? i always thought that maybe they wouldn’t consider me because i turned them down therefore showing no interest in their school. it wouldn’t hurt to try right?

sorry duxdro, that’s an urban myth - you have to apply again!

especially if you previously rejected the college, you need to make a case about why you want to go there now. I know, for example, Occidental as a different transfer application question for those who applied last year and got in but didn’t go.

this doesn’t mean, however, that the school won’t accept you if you apply again!

You would have to apply again, but if they really liked you the last time, chances are they will still like you. And, if they happen to have space for the fall, they might like to grab you (and your tuition money). Pick up the phone. Give them a call. Find out if it’s possible. The worst thing they can say is “No”.

duxdro,

Being accepted to Bocconi from the US is a HUGE accomplishment. They only accept incoming freshmen with 5 AP courses. I’m sure you can get accepted at the colleges you turned down - you might have to write another essay describing your experience. But being accepted by Bocconi is truly commendable!! I’m sure you’re not the first nor the last student to come back to the US – use it as a life experience!

I wanted to attend Bocconi but eventhough I have a great GPA and scored well in the SAT’s, they said they could only accept my US diploma with 5 AP which they had to approve. The two AP’s I took (Spanish and US History) were not even on their list. I can only apply if I have two years of college in lieu of the 5 APs.

So I wonder, how many US freshmen were there? Besides your bad experience with the academics, was life in Milan ok?
