the second student in my school to take the SATS[first kid got a 1900/2400]

Been to 6 other schools in toronto, hongkong and guangzhou.
fluent in English, Mandarin, cantonese, shanghaiese, and is taking French.

Schools I'm looking at:
McGill
Carleton
Williams
Barnard
Smith
Bowdoin
Wellesley
Amherst
Swarthmore
Columbia
Dartmouth
Duke
Yale
Harvard
UToronto
Queens (Canada)
Hamilton
Colgate
Grinnell

PS I'm a Canadian living in Asia for the past 6 years, I'm using Canadian schools like UToronto as safeties. Oh, and the long college list is also because I'm looking for fin. aid.

Thanks!!!

Your extracurriculars aren't that impressive, you'll have a tough time staying competitive at the Ivy Leagues and other top tier american schools. Also the Ivies typicall require 2-3 SAT II scores as well. Also don't go to U of T, i'm from Toronto, and many of my friends go there and they all their lives now.

McGill - good chance
Carleton- good chance
Williams - no chance
Barnard - a chance
Smith- good chance
Bowdoin- a chance
Wellesley -little chance
Amherst -little chance
Swarthmore no chance
Columbia-no chance
Dartmouth -no chance
Duke -no chance
Yale -no chance
Harvard-no chance
UToronto- in
Queens (Canada) - in
Hamilton -in
Colgate - good chance
Grinnell -good chance

Maybe happyjane, with hip hop, no mention of math, science, piano, violin or tennis ECs, no Mu Alpha Theta and hasn't played at Carnegie Hall-- is the breakout Asian candidate everyone is talking about.

if you are silly enough to apply to ~20 schools (even if you are asking aid), then you will have no chance of surviving at a top 25 college

depends on the actual prestige of "winner of best delegate at National conference in China mainland", you might have a chance at some good liberal arts colleges

cross out harvard and the other ivies. you simply do not have a chance there

"McGill - good chance

What an incredibly arbitrary list. In at Hamilton, little chance at Amherst, no chance at Williams (which is, arguably, a better shot for internationals than Amherst and on the whole of about equal selectivity?) "In" at UT and "good chance" at McGill, when they're roughly equal selectivity?

What arbitrary hogwash.

I have never encouraged someone before, but I will now. I actually believe that you DO have a chance at some of these schools... although I am an Australian living in Indonesia, I have lived in China and I understand how difficult government regulations make it to have extra curriculars. The ivies will understand this! The fact that you are a Canadian (being from a western country always helps) living in a partly-communist country is commendable - you have language dilemmas that limit your ability to have EC (which is hard already), somehow you have managed to complete the SAT and you're completing the IB Diploma. If I were you, and I will be similar next year, I would say that you have a good chance at being admitted to a college.

McGill: 75%
Carleton: 70%
Williams: 35% shot
Barnard: 75%
Smith: 85%
Bowdoin: 60%
Wellesley: 60%
Amherst: 35%
Swarthmore: 40%
Columbia: 30%
Dartmouth: 35%
Duke: 40%
Yale: 20%
Harvard: 20%
UToronto: Not sure
Queens (Canada): Not sure
Hamilton: 85%
Colgate: 60%
Grinnell: 70%

Just my guess...I think datadriven is too harsh, you will get into many of these schools.

Yeah, I definitely do not see why peoplke are being so harsh. I think you have an excellent shot at several of your schools and a decent shot atmost of the rest. Take what people say on here with a grain of salt. Just try as hard as you can and maybe you'll have a big surprise when those fat envelopes start piling in your mailbox in a few months. Good luck!
