my major is sociology, as you can see i’ve taken approximately 4 or 5 sociology classes and earned all a’s. i have strong rec’s and a variety of ec’s and eadership positions. my sat in high school was a 1300. hoping to go to a top 20 private school. high school record was a 2.2 gpa.

I’m not going to lie to you - a top20 would be difficult with a 3.6 gpa, with above mentioned extras. It certainly has been done before, and documented on this forum.

However, if you are referring to top20 public schools, then you have a much better shot.

if you apply to schools within your state, then you’ve got a better chance.

I suggest you take the new SAT’s. Unless it’s 1300 out of 2400… then I suggest you retake the SAT (+2100 is probably a better shot). Take the ACT too, if you want to see which score ends up being better.

Still, a 3.6 GPA is pretty low for top 20 schools. Even for Berkeley (#1 public school), which is in the top 20 (depends on which ranking you look at) that’s a pretty low chance.

Don’t let us deter you. Get that GPA up and keep trying!

i want to go to a private school, top 20ish..im not from california…its 1300/1600…act is 28…you really don’t think i can get in as a transfer to any top 20ish schools with my transcript and college grades? i thought my transcript was really solid? what are my chances at USC?

Since you’re not in-state, I think your chances at USC are reduced in comparison to those in-state. I think you should read some of the threads of students that have applied or are transferring to Top 20 schools.

Again my suggestion is your take the SAT’s and ACT again. Maybe you’ll do even better the second time around.

I think your chances are slim. I applied to U of C (last second, just to see) and I didn’t get in. I certainly wasn’t surprised when I was rejected, after I saw all of the other students applying on this forum.

of course, this is one of those cases that I hope you can prove me incorrect! =)

^ for some reason, it seems like a lot of people on this board are transferring out of NYU. so based on that, it seems like NYU might take a good amount of transfers. its definitely worth a shot.

i was under the impression that being out of state for any school lowers your chances. I can be incorrect, as they don’t have a difference between out of state or in state fees.

I’m fairly sure privates do not favor one over another. State schools are a different story, but even for some state schools, such as UNC, state of residence does not matter for transfer students.

I believe you guys are correct. However I have heard of CC’s near private schools having an “in” with the school. Not common, of course, but I do remember seeing an ad on the NY Subway for a CC near NYU that has a transfer program to NYU. This was two years ago, haha, but I remember turning to my cousin who attends Columbia and asking him how that works. Of course he had no idea, he doesn’t need to worry about transferring as he attends Columbia… haha.
