Evaluated against other people from your school?

Hey guys! I was just wondering if you know of any instances in which the number of accepted people in your school substantially increased. My school admits one or two to Yale every year despite our rather large size (I don't think they like us...we get about 7 admits to Stanford, but that's closer). However, this year, the applicant pool is more qualified than in years before looking even at the students that were accepted into Yale in past years. Will that change the number of people accepted in our school or will we have to compete against each other for the few spots that are available?

You can never tell. They might accept more people, they may accept nobody. But yes, they do compare people from the same school. Who is the best fit for the incoming class? Who has made the most out of the opportunities?

they might accept one more

I asked my local rep the same question and he said absolutely not; each applicant stands on their own two feet against the applicant pool.

^ Exactly. It’s the individual and his/her strengths. One year you may have few applicants but more admittees. Another year, more applicants and maybe only a single or no admit. It’s serendipity and depends on what the larger applicant pool is bringing in any particular year.

Yale adcom at an info session agreed–no school limit, every applicant evaluated on their merits.

Yeah, definitely not. We had 4 admitted SCEA at my school last year and 2 to Harvard. We’re just a good public, not a prep school.

I agree with the general census…I do not believe that schools have a truly fixed quota for schools

It’s of no value to Yale to turn down great students to curry favor with other local high schools. They spend beaucoup cash on marketing and recruiting. It’d be utter foolishness to randomly limit admits from any single school just so they can “spread the wealth”.

Think about it. This would be the sole reason for a quota system.

But there’s nothing to be gained. They aren’t beholden to other high schools’ sense of entitlement. No quotas

^ T26E4 knows his stuff  He was around last year when I was freaking out about this stuff too…
But yeah, I’m pretty sure Yale doesn’t have a quota per school, but to some degree, you’re definitely evaluated against other people at your school. But the bottom line is that if you’re good enough to get in you’ll get in, regardless of where you go.

@fuzzyfirebunny, what were you stats last year?
