<p>Guys, what should one look for in a good SAT tutor, especially for the math section, but also for the others?
My D attends a public hs that concentrates on the arts and doesn't provide SAT prep as part of their regular curriculum.
We think she should work one-on-one with a good tutor (especially on the math portions ... father and I were both English majors and write and read for a living, so we can be more than a little helpful on the other sections), but we are not sure how to find/evaluate the tutors that we see listed in the local newspaper, community directory, etc. I have read enough on this list to know that we do NOT want her to waste time and money taking the PR or other group courses.
Can anyone suggest some things we should look for? Not every person who got a high score on his/her SAT makes a good tutor. A good tutor has to be a good teacher and must be really familiar with the test. HELP! Time is running out.
Thanks!!</p>
<p>Criteria to consider:</p>
<p>~ how long the tutor's been tutoring
~ what tests/subjects are his/her best?
~ what kind of extra support do they offer, and is it free? i.e. online drills, essay review, etc.
~ do they offer a guarantee, what is it, and what do you have to do to qualify for it? (i.e., doing all the homework, not missing sessions with the tutor, etc.)
~ If you go with an established company (like PR) over a private individual, ask about teacher reviews. If you go for an independent tutor, definitely ask for referrals, not just written testimonials. Call those folks and ask about their experiences.</p>
<p>Hope this helps!</p>
<p>The answer of "what right does this individual have to call himself a good tutor?"</p>
<p>My English tutor was, for instance, a Princeton Graduate who had proven her effectiveness through numerous high SAT scores from her past students. Look for testimonials, and also look at whether there is that connection between her and her students. By the end of the first day, I truly respected this woman, and we could talk about fashion, our beliefs, practically anything that you can think of. She truly cared about me getting a good score, and my respect for her let me really listen and do what she asked of me.</p>
