Evanston: area and off-campus housing

Hi you all! I am thinking about applying to a summer research program at Northwestern next summer (06). I would likely live off campus if accepted. It would be for 2 months. Is Evanston a place that is easily accessible by foot or bus? Is the housing there pretty affordable? Since it's such a short time period, I could afford to pay more if its closer to the university. How are the summers? Is the heat bearable? Is the area pretty safe and quiet? how far is it from Chicago?

Also, how is the linguistics department? IF selected for next summer, I would be working closely with a faculty member in the linguistics dept.

Um...depends what you mean by affordable. The cheapest apartment you could probably find would be about $800 a month--and that is rare. Yes, Evanston is almost like a small city and is very easy to get around. It is about 25 minutes to half an hour from Chicago. The heat is bearable, there are a few hot days, but mostly it is beautiful. The area is pretty safe. There are a few sort of "slums", but you will be fine. The only reason I know this is that I used to live in Highland Park. You should love it there. The North Shore is, as I said before, Beautiful.

ok cool....i see that after poking around on the nwu website there is a place to look for housing or to post housing.......i'll use that and Craig's list when it comes to be that time. from looking at craigs list....there looks like there is a lof of places that are 600 ish and a couple of rooms for rent that are cheaper....we'll see what hapens! thanks
