Even a faint chance at Rice?

I'm a rising senior from Northern Virginia, and I'm not a minority or from a top ranked high school so I know I don't have any hook to lean on. My SAT score right now is at 2000, but im retaking it in october so im hoping for a 2100+. My unweighted GPA for the 5 core academic courses is approximately 3.82 on a 4.0 scale. I say approximate because my official school GPA includes my mandatory religion and ethics courses (I go to a private school), so I had to calculate my core class GPA myself.

AP Courses by end of high school: Chemistry, Euro History (5), US History (4), Language and Comp (5), Literature, US Government (school offers very few AP classes).
All other non-AP courses were honors since the beginning of freshman year. So I will have about 16-20 honors and AP courses by the end of high school.

EC's include:
- Physics peer tutor (senior year, im becoming a history, french, chemistry and physics tutor)
- National Honors Society
- National French Honors Society
- editor-in-chief for a division of a major website
- co-manager of another online organization for 1 year
- black belt in martial arts
- co captain on school's Georgetown University History Bowl team
- co founder of school's quiz bowl team
- chess club

So here is a reiteration of the question: would it be a waste of money to apply or could I actually have a shot if I can raise my SAT score to where I think I will score (around 2100)?

I think you should have a fairly good chance. Try to raise your SAT, and you should be good!

Chance me!

Well, Rice is definitely a reach for you however, I don’t believe it is a waste of money for you to try because it’s not an impossible reach. If you can get a 2100+ and write brilliant essays and get very strong recs, it’s not at all impossible for you to get admitted. Also make sure you get a 4.0 this semester. It will be a long shot but not impossible.

If I don’t improve my SAT score or I don’t reach my goal of 2100 on the october SAT, then should I maybe apply to Boston College or Wake Forest instead where I’ll have a better shot? I mean I know I have a solid GPA and my school profile would show that I’m comfortably in the top 10% of my class, but would it still be a waste if I can’t improve my SAT score by much?

BTW, I listed BC and Wake Forest because those are the other 2 schools I’d apply to if applying to Rice seems unreasonable.

I think you should get in if you bring up your SAT score! Good luck!

BC and Wake are probably better fits for you whether or not you get that 100 point improvement. Rice is a reach for you regardless. I would say you should definitely apply to both BC and Wake and I think you have a legitimate shot at both.

aight, thanks for your thoughts.
