Even as a former Yooper

The weather this week in Hyde Park scares me. But having lived through it, I’ll say it builds character and makes you love summer so much more. -60 degrees wind chill, low of -20 on Wednesday.

Perhaps a silly question, but, any chance they cancel classes Wednesday? My D has, I believe, 3 spread throughout the day throughout campus, and the thought of her walking around campus in -20 definitely scares me - she’s not big on gloves/hats/scarves, etc…

My kids are at ND and I’m really hoping they cancel classes. Predicted high of -13 without factoring in the windchill. ?

I hope she makes an exception for Tuesday and Wednesday, exposed skin is a bad idea. I’ve heard that they aren’t big on canceling classes. I’ve seen some things on the parents facebook page and the college facebook page about how you can basically go around the quad without going outside.

Thanks - will definitely encourage the accessories and mention there are ways to get around without going outside - hopefully she’ll figure those out ahead of time.

UChicago will shut down if conditions for getting to work or school are simply too dangerous (ie public transit won’t run and/or area businesses are shutting down). If that doesn’t happen, those in South or BJ might consider shuttle of CTA to class. More round-about, but more comfortable. As they say to all of us up here in the tundra (where my 9th and 12 graders are currently enjoying an online learning day courtesy of the Snowpocalyse that just hit us): give yourself extra time to get to where you need to go.

Welcome to the Midwest!

My son has started answering his phone with the following greeting, “yes, mom- I am warm enough. No frostbite yet.”

Maybe he’ll finally be forced to shut his window all the way. Up until now he said his room was too hot so had it open a crack. I’m shivering just thinking about it.

I am a current grad student, does anyone know what the UChicago procedure is for announcing closures/cancellations/changes? My undergrad sent an email but I haven’t been on campus for a weather emergency yet.

You should get an e-mail and there will probably be a pop-up notice on the website.

@milee30 my first year on campus was in I-House with a noisy radiator and my window FROZE open LOL. Can’t recall - is he in one of the new or old dorms?

It scares the life out of me! My S may have a lot of ‘book sense’ but he has no ‘common sense’ Frostbite would be high up there on my list of concerns in weather like that.

He’s in one of the old dorms. Loves it.

Son had one day cancelled in 4 years. It was the first day of classes in Winter 2014 when the temp (not wind chill) was a high of -10 degrees fahrenheit during the day. I don’t think it was just the low temperature, but the fact that it was the first day and many had travel plans disrupted which ultimately forced the cancellation.

Wed. classes just cancelled.

We got the message, too.

Glad they’re making ‘special arrangements’ for dining for the Stoney and IHouse residents so they don’t have to do the trek for food.

@milee30 Do you know what they are?

No idea what exactly the arrangements are, my kid isn’t in one of those dorms. I just know about them because the email sent to students and parents mentioned that Stoney and IHouse would have special dining arrangements.

I also thought it was smart, humane and just plain human to pull the security guards who normally stand at many UChicago street corners around the border of campus. It would be horrible if one of them were to be injured (frostbite - see, it’s a reasonable concern!) by the cold. Hopefully the cold will also keep any would-be criminals home so it’s not an issue to not have foot patrol.

Whew, relief is what I felt after reading the email that classes will be cancelled on Wednesday, not to mention it’ll give him time to catch up on all the reading.

For safety sake the Administration should cancel all the morning classes on Thursday. It will still be really cold, although most likely the wind chill will be in minus mid 20’s instead of minus 40’s on Wednesday at 4:00 am.

@milee30 You are absolutely correct. Long time Chicagoans know that when wind chill goes below minus 30 degree, crime drops a lot across the city. No one wants to be outside when wind chill hit minus 45 or lower.
