Everyone and No One

Many of us are parents of more than one children and hence have experience in situations where there are opposing points of view that quite frankly we feel like we have listened to for long enough…At the moment I am jet lagged(a prime time for CC viewing) and cranky so my threshold is low and in my own mind I will institute the policy I use(d) at my house when the older 2 would get into it when younger…called “Everyone and No One.” Here was(is) how it worked…I would walk into the room of noise and clutter and choose to not listen to the argument at hand and would clearly state “Everyone and No One started the fight” or “Everyone and No One made the mess”. With that, discussion ended and the problems were attended to. In that spirit I would like to say that my own threshold for hearing about some topics is surpassed, and with kind and gentle thoughts would like to suggest that…

Everyone and No One binge drinks at Williams but not at Swarthmore.

Everyone and No One has a child who is entitled to preferential college admissions based on race, EC’s and legacy status.

Everyone and No One is a preppy at Davidson but not at Smith.

Everyone and No One pushes their kid or has a kid who pushes themselves.

Everyone and No One is more excited to hear a kid was accepted at Harvard than at U. Mass.

Okay, blast away at me…I have to go to work anyways! And, have a nice day! Or, feel to add your own Everyone and No One topics to the list!!

And to those who feel compelled to continue these discussions, happy arguing!

Everyone and no one is racist.
Everyone and no one is entitled to expensive private tertiary education.

ps Hey, how did your S make the decision? did I miss that post?

Everyone and no one agrees on the relative worth of "prestige" schools vs. cheaper schools.

oh, everyone's a little bit racist...its true.

Good thread! (And by the way, for those who don't recognize it, wondrist's post is a lyric from the musical "Avenue Q.")

haha YAY EDITRIX! =D i was wondering if anyone would get that.

Everyone and no one thinks Williams is an alcohol- fueled jock school.
Everyone and no one has debated over the LAC vs. Ivy argument.
Everyone and no one thinks their kid's school is perfect in every way.

Funny, I do think of schools like Williams, Smith, Davidson, Swarthmore with certain images in mind, and the images, while overlapping, are different to a detectable degree.

Not that there aren't numerous exceptions, but I take it you don't believe there is any "birds of a feather" component to college selection? Particularly with LACs, where the environment is more "customizable"?

I guess I'm just a victim of stereotyping, then...

Wondrist...I got it too and was surprised anyone else was aware of it....love those songs....

Everyone and no one thinks the grammar section on the new SAT is unfair, irrelevant, and racist.

Haha, Wondrist, soozievt, and editrix... I love Avenue Q.

Everyone and No One thinks that any disparaging remark about HYP is sour grapes and/or jealousy and can't believe your kid really didn't want to attend and you (the parent) don't really mind not being part of "The Club".

Everyone and no one thinks that elite schools offer no real value beyond a fancy label.

And everyone and no one wishes they could go back to college....They'd sit in the quad and think, "Oh my God! I am totally gonna go far!"

momsdream, didn't you mean everyone, no one, and Byerly? :)

This sounds like a fun game but I can't figure out how to play it :(. How about if I PM you all my pet peeves and you translate them? :D (Don't worry, kidding.....)

Everyone has a right to express controversial opinions on this board and no one has a right to express controversial opinions on this board.

My goodness, the threads are flying away left and right. I suppose each person is entitled to a different opinion of what is offensive or harmful or not useful...it is a bit surprising, I must admit...

roby, what threads have flown lately? I saw the small town politics thread, then the one commenting on it both go bye bye, but anything else?

A recent (tonight, your time) discussion of a student's comments about her own college acceptances and how others should not be "prestige mongers", among other things...the thread is also gone...

Robyrm, points number 2, 4 and 5 come about because this is a revolving forum with new parents and kids coming for the new admission season. I think you cannot prevent it. Ok, some of us are old-timers who occasionally get sick of all the arguments and take a break. But this forum is like a revolving door. Can't prevent arguments like that. If I saw another 'Uni vs. LAC' argument, I would barf but I'm sure it would be new to some people.

Another 'Everyone and No One' theme is outsourcing and why not to study Math and Sciences or why study Math and Sciences. Another one is the value of (dollar value of) an elite education.

And of course, there is Harvard bashing....
