clearly a lot of people apply to ivy league schools for the hell of it or because they have no idea how hard it is to get in/know the requirements. if you believe differently, you're very naive. i live in a pretty big town and there is almost no one in my entire school that knows what sat subject tests are and there are many who think that a 4.0 will get you into any school in the country. (including counselors) therefore, it's only logical that CollegeConfidential would have a naturally higher acceptance rate than the national average. yes, those who got rejected are less likely to post their results, but still, read some of hte chance threads and see the amazing applicants. and yes the OPs logic is flawed as i pointed out in my first post.

ModestMelody, clearly you're mentally challenged. First, you have no grammar skills whatsoever. It's astounding that you could get accepted to any college, let alone Brown.

Second, I was in no way implying that signing up for CC gets you into an ivy-league college, I was merely citing based on threads from past years that the acceptance rate of people who applied to top colleges from this website is 40-60%. You can find the threads for yourself. I assume you know how to navigate an online forum, no?

my son goes to Choate and his grades are really slipping, he got a 1242 on his SAT and everything is going downhill, what should I do?

I think I may have to pull him out of Choate for a better institution

My use of the wrong "your" get your panties in a twist?

I'm sorry.

Chances threads are stupid and exist purely to stroke the ego of overanxious pre-frosh who don't realize several important things:
1) If you have the grades that match the averages at the school, you have a chance.
2) That's all anyone can say. The process is so utterly unpredictable anyone saying anything about admissions results other than, "Who the **** knows?" is lying.
3) It's not the end of the world if you don't get in. Not even their world, not even close.

I apologize for not proofreading everything after I type it, I generally feel that CC is an informal place where that sort of thing is understood.

It's amazing that someone thinks that it's even worth commenting on the fact that CCers care more about college and therefore get in at higher rates (absolutely true I'm sure, since those in the upper quartile in terms of income but lower quartile in terms of HS demonstration of intelligence attend post-secondary schools at the same rate as the highest quartile, academically, of the lowest quartile, financially. Though some of this is due to the rising cost in education, much of this is due to the inequality of information that exists about the college admissions process and financial aid. This webpage is about providing that information, which, in-it-of-itself is empowering), when the point of the thread is STOP ASKING IF YOU'RE GOING TO GET IN. No one knows, and no one likes people who ask since they have only two possible motives: showing off or seeking an ego stroke. Either that, or they have no idea how to use a search engine (which is far more excusable than the first two, but somewhat shocking for someone who found this page...)

Though I've sometimes hinted at some things about myself, I've never once shared a stat on this page or pushed myself as an example or an average example. I'll simply say that my experience here is that the numbers on the webpage are the real numbers, and that's the best idea anyone has.

People here should ask far more meaningful questions considering the great resources of information that exist here from several students and parents.

OK - everybody calm down!
The process is arbitrary because the majority of students who apply are qualifies - or highly qualified - for acceptance.

If you want ot get an insider's look at the selection process, I strongly suggest you procure a copy of The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College by Jacques Steinberg. Steinberg details the experiences of six students who are applying to Wesleyan. He was granted unparalleled access to the deliberations of the admissions committee and, well, it's not pretty. It's pretty arbitrary.

Even the pee-wees can beat the Patriots. At least on paper, when you look at their stats.

OKay...to everyone who responded to my last post...

I didn't say one should value the opinions of random people who respond to his/her chances threads. I was merely saying WHY people post chances threads, not that I actually value them nor that I feel they should be valued.

And modestmelody, you said that the kids who would really wow me aren't posting on this board...I don't know that I believe that entirely.

People don't actually know each other on this board. Half of the time I post it's to invoke some kind of interesting reaction, not necessarily because I'm trying to convey my personality and entire humanity through a few words in a little box.

So who knows...maybe the really brilliant kids on this board are the ones posting ridiculous things just for the kicks they get out of seeing "brilliant" kids respond and try to put their posts down.

"More applicants than ever before."

actually, the ed applicant pool dropped this year.

I meant college applicants in general. This thread is not at all specific to Brown, or at least, my comments aren't.
