Eh from what I've read, each dorm has it's own subtle "personality." Does anyone know if we get to rank which dorm we'd prefer to be in, or if it's totally random? Also, if any current students want to weigh in on their housing experiences at Georgetown, that'd be great too! Or if you just want to post your own preference, that's cool too. basically, it's a housing free-for-all. RAGE.

totally random hahah :(

i felt a vague inclination toward new south when i visited, but i don’t think they are really all that different, at least for freshmen dorms

You don’t get to rank which dorm you get, sadly, but most people are happy where they end up. People say everyone is happy, but that isn’t true - I have friends who are fed up with noise and lack of class in New South (more so earlier in the year), and also friends who hate that Darnall is far away, neglected, and has rats.

I live in Harbin, and it’s my personal favorite - I like the view of Rosslyn that I have and the proximity to nearly all of my classes. New South has bigger rooms and a sink/vanity in each room. Village C rooms have their own bathrooms. Darnall can’t be made to sound great unless you lie. Sure, some people are closer with their floormates, but most people I know aren’t any more close than in Harbin. Darnall is close to the Leavey Center, the GUTS (shuttle bus) stop, the student health center, Epicurean (restaurant), and classes for math, comp sci, and NHS.

You don’t get to pick unless you live in a “living and learning” community, which I don’t especially recommend. I think most people end up liking where they live. Everyone who doesn’t live in Darnall seems to think it’s a fate worse than death. On the other hand, people who live in Darnall tend to insist it’s the best (cognitive dissonance anyone?) and Darnall does tend to form a very tight community.

Personally, I like Harbin the best as well, but I lived there, so I’m biased. At the end of the day, all of the dorms are decent. None are great. None are terrible. You’ll hopefully make some good friends and end up liking the place.

Harbin was definitely the best (I lived there!). I put in a little request for Harbin in the comments section (was told to do that by an older student during the tour and it worked out)… but I have a feeling Darnall is going to be the place to be in the coming years especially with the new science building coming up in a couple years…

Anyone have an idea of the housing situation for transfers? Do we get whatever is left over, or do we not get any at all?

I visited the 2nd gaap weekend, and liked new south and harbin the best. I stayed on campus with a current freshmen in harbin, and really liked it. Then, on the freshmen dorm tour I saw new south and really liked it there too. My thinking is I’ve got a 50% shot of getting a dorm I like right now, and if I don’t then its not the end of the world because vcw was cool too and darnall supposedly the really close and social dorm.

I’m just excited to be at gu next year! Hoya Saxa

what comments section? i didnt realized we could fill out housing forms so early?

yeah, what is the general timeline for all the housing shiz? when can we start the roommate search and when can we file for housing? and do we have to pay when we file for housing? im curious

Go to [Georgetown University New Student Orientation 2010](http://nso.georgetown.edu). Lots of info there.

vcw isn’t bad either. you realize what luxury it is to have your own bathroom. but i really would’ve liked harbin. darnall’s pretty good if you’re an nhs kid because you’re close to your classes.

Almost every student will tell you that their freshman dorm was the best.
I lived in Darnall and wouldn’t have given it up for the world. The people on my floor were fantastic, and the community atmosphere overtakes any possible rats.

Plus, it’s getting renovated this summer. (Hearsay from the security guard who works there, but 98% sure I believe him.)

Either way, it won’t matter where you live, or whether or not you do CHARMS. I didn’t do CHARMS and was miserable when I found out I was in Darnall, but as I said before I would not have wanted to live anywhere else.

Darnall renovation = changing the carpet (trust me)
