Everything I learned from Freshman year at UM

1 North campus sucks. You're isolated from all the fun (Central Campus).
2 Seriously tho it sucks. So you better feel pretty awesome if you get to live on Central your freshman year
3 Youll have to give a good half hour to get to class on Central it sucks BIG TIME.
4 Things aren't actually that bad on North. More on that later. But on the note of 3, you will begin to LOVE Michigan time every class begins 10 minutes late
5 Now because of Michigan time I am literally 10 minutes late to everything hehe
6 Youll meet soo many people during welcome week. Youll forget the name of everyone you meet. I guarantee it.
7 When meeting new people the same questions will be asked in the following order: 1 What is your name 2 Where are you from 3 What is your major
8 After talking to those people you will remember everything about them but you will forget their name in a matter of seconds. Just wait and see cuz it'll happen
9 Welcome week=best week ever
10 Dont go to the "fun activities" to meet new people. Seriously they are a waste of time.
11 Party hard during welcome week cuz itll be the most partying youll get in all year as freshman if you dont rush and it's a sh!t load of fun :D
12 If your RA is cool be very happy. Some of them can be pretty stuck up
13 If you dont think tailgating for football games is fun, you are at the wrong school
14 Tailgates are F%#ING AWESOME free beer everywhere :D
15 If you are a big fan of M football and you go to the games, make sure you go w/ a good group of people who also like football. If you do you will have the best time at the game
16 If you dont care that much about football and you go to the games you will end up sitting in one of the last rows of the stadium next to a girl from NY who had too much during the tailgate. You will not have a good time
17 The ND game was the best day of my life. Tailgating all day and then having a night game!! It was INSANE
18 Never skip the OSU game. Even though we lost, that game was insane and I wish I was there soo bad
19 Michigan has the best tailgates out of any team in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country so make the most of them!!
20 For being a football school there are a lot of people who dont know anything about football
21 Brighter days are headed for the football team. If anyone wants to talk about M football Id be happy to!
22 A night game against Penn St this year is enough of a reason to buy season tickets
23 Ok enough of my football rants
24 99% of freshmen are Engineering PreMed or PreRoss
25 After grades for MATH 115 are given back that is when students start looking at other majors
26 Alot of kids here are absolute geniuses and they will make you feel stupid
27 There are also alot of really dumb people here Youll wonder how they could ever get into UM
28 Youll eat so much pizza. Itll become the most important part of your diet
29 Youll never run out of great places to eat!
30 My go-to's were Pancheros which btw is way better than Chipotle. Pancheros>50 feet of crap>Chipotle. Next up Jimmy Johns. Rays Red Hots-amazing hot dogs and milkshakes. Pizza Bob's--great pizza and the milkshakes are divine. Mr. Spot's philly cheesesteaks!! Bell's pizza!! Potbelly! And RJ's Coney island!
31 ^I gained the freshman 15
32 If you dont workout regularly youll get into terrible shape
33 The only working out youll do is when you play pickup Bball at the North Rec Building and its not very crowded which is good
34 This starts the stuff that isnt so bad about North. First off, if you are on North be happy if you get Bursley. Baits and Northwood are pretty crappy
35 The Blue Apple at Bursley is awesome really good pizza and subs!
36 In the winter all the people in Bursley all stay in the dorms and never leave. Itll be a great bonding time with some of your hallmates They turned out to be my bestfriends and Im living in a house with them on Central next year
37 The hut on north campus...you will here about it if you are on north. I wont say too much because I dont want to spoil the surprise ;)
38 Some of the most fun I had all of last year were Bartlett parties (Bartlett is one of the houses in Bursley). We just bought a fifth or two and shared them amongst all of us and played video games, etc
39 (Off topic to North and Burs) Bring super smash bros melee. It is required that you Smash
40 Everyone will start to find out about NCRB and youll never be able to play a pickup game again cuz it gets so crowded
41 North kinda gives you the full experience of Michigan even tho it had its downsides. I wouldnt change it for the world :)
42 (Back to other stuff) The Mens B league for IM Bball is crazy. You have to be REALLY good to compete with the teams in B. Join C
43 Co-rec B volleyball is a blast so get a team together!
44 If you dont rush it's not the end of the world cuz there are other great ways to make friends (clubs, in your classes, in your dorm, etc.)
45 Try to check out a few clubs you are interested in. GO TO FESTIFALL
46 You will procrastinate soo much. Its inevitable
47 You will spend a lot of nights alone studying in the lounge that is closest to your room and it's gonna suck. My record is 7:30 AM
48 If you are a chronic procrastinator, dont feel bad when one of your classmates says he has been studying for this test for the last two weeks when you havent started studying yet. I always did better than them ;)
49 If you are PreRoss, there is one thing you shouldnt procrastinate. Start the application EARLY. Not the weekend before its due (what I did). But I still got in!! Yay!! :)
50 Dont become an arrogant a$h0le if you get into Ross. Thats what happens alot so dont let it be you if you get in
51 If you dont have Netflix youll die
52 Learn all of the acronyms and nicknames for places (MLB, the arb, the fishbowl, etc.) asap or else you will sound stupid
53 The arb is not just a place to look at trees and go hiking ;)
54 Ann Arbor and UM is soo liberal
55 Seriously its liberal af
56 Harry Potter was almost filmed at the Law Quad. That place looks like Hogwarts its so beautiful
57 If you ever go inside of the Law library make sure youre dressed fairly nice and you dont make a sound or else people will stare at you
58 If you go to the stacks in the Grad library I guarantee you will get lost the first time
59 The Shapiro library aka the UGLi (see 52) is where you go to study
60 There are sooooo many Asians here and a lot of them don't speak English. Its pretty cray. They dont call it A(si)A for nothing haha
61 If you want to live in a house the next year, start looking really early. Like in october. Not December. By then all of the good houses will be taken
62 Make sure you get out of the dorms after freshman year. Dorms aren't that great
63 If you are ever looking to go Chicago (or other places) take the Megabus. It's pretty cheap if you buy tickets early. Amtrak is really expensive and Greyhound is really sketchy
64 Even tho AA is one of the best college towns in america you will rarely go to downtown AA. just the way things are especially as a freshman. Once you are 21 or older you can start going to the nice bars downtown. if youre younger stick with ricks and skeeps
65 If you are looking for blow off classes take astronomy, pysch, or sociology. They are so easy idk why they even have them at UM. If you dont get an A in those classes you are either dumb af or youve been raging too hard haha
66 AA winters are the worst!!! It gets so cold here! If you are not from Michigan it will seem like Siberia
67 Make the most of your time here because it goes by really quick!! Youll be moving into your dorm and next thing you know, freshman year is over
68 After 2-3 weeks back home, you will become very very bored and wish you were back at school. I miss UM so much and I can't wait to get back!! Im so excited for sophomore year!!
69 Finally, and most importantly, GO BLUE!!!!!!

is it me or does everyone come up with 69 69 69 69 69 69 69 69 things in this kind of lists?

The Hut!!! I loved the hut. I definitely will visit next year. I have so many memories there.

I notice CoE, pre-med and pre-Ross… and also computer science at orientation. I’m sure there’s a weed out course for those silicon valley millionaire dreams to be shattered?

Panchero’s > Chipotle sounds like you’re just trying to be different and go against the grain.

I bought football tix but almost $300 for one game – we’re prob going to lose and/or I’ll be too drunk to remember – isn’t “worth it” IMO. If my dad didn’t buy them and they had to come out of my budget or something, I wouldn’t have wasted the money.

With almost 1/3 of the freshman class applying to Ross, I’m wonder how many of those applicants are actually serious? 20% acceptance rate seems so harsh, but there’s no way 2,000 of those applicants had legitimate applications… right?

The more people come up with these lists, the more Michigan students look like illiterate alcoholics.

Midwest, 6,000 freshman each year, large Greek life and a 110k seat football stadium. Why are you shocked drinking occurs? It’s not like it’s anywhere close to as bad as Western or Central. Work hard, play hard.

@umichsquad‌ haha had some great times at the hut… met some interesting people there. Who knows, maybe we had a conversation!

beckstiles, Michigan will likely beat PSU in Ann Arbor this year. And if you are going to attend just one game, you should be able to sell your remaining 6 tickets for at least $150 ($200 if you play it smart). So you would have actually paid $100-$150 to watch Michigan vs PSU. Still expensive, but more palatable.

@beckstiles‌ not sure about the weed out class for computer science… it’s just funny with MATH 115 everyone comes together having dreams of becoming doctors and going into business. Those dreams are promptly shattered within their first semester of college haha
And yes, panchero’s>>>chipotle. If you dont believe me then try it for yourself. Panchero’s makes their tortillas fresh (they take this ball of dough or whatever it is, compress it, and throw it on the stove for a little bit) and they mix all of the ingredients together with tongs. Chipotle does neither
About the Penn St game… that was an exaggeration. But most people who bought season tix will cite the Penn St game as their main reason for buying them. I mean it’s tailgating all day with your best buds and then watching a football game under the lights in the largest stadium in america. It is quite fun
And for Ross, the acceptance rate for regular decision is more like 40% (maybe a little less than that). 2013 stats (2014 stats aren’t up yet) were something like 1,100 applicants and about 450 got in. And there are a lot of kids who apply to Ross who have no chance whatsoever of getting in
Enjoy freshman year!

Sorry for bad Ross %. I used the PA applicant number. Seems like about 1 in 5 freshman apply to Ross, which is still pretty incredible because a lot of freshman are CoE or stamps or music or something that are highly unlikely to apply. Are people actually arrogant when they get in? If you find out over the summer, so how are people projecting arrogance?

Your thing about math 115 is weird because most of my friends took ap calc and don’t have to take any calc if they intend to apply to Ross ??

How can you make $200 on something if nobody even wants to go? I partied a bunch last year with kids from my high school and people with student football tix were just giving them away before kickoff. I don’t follow football really but everything says this year UM is going to be worse and all the home games are terrible outside of PSU. I don’t see anyone clamoring for my student section tix.

Every single one of these topics is made by someone who has an obviously terrible taste in food. I’m sick of having to correct them. But at least this guy didn’t talk about No Thai.

Uugghhh I hate these lists

@Vladenschlutte‌ very true. this reads like a student from a small town in Michigan who didn’t have access to many good food options growing up.

“19 Michigan has the best tailgates out of any team in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country so make the most of them!!”

You attended tailgates at every other school? Impressive.

Seriously, if you’re gonna make one of these, just stick with what you know. I’ve tailgated at Penn State several times and it matches or betters U of M’s. Also, consider spending a bit more time on grammar and formatting, I feel like I have to repeat 6th grade after reading this.

“22 A night game against Penn St this year is enough of a reason to buy season tickets”
lol.

@entenduintransit‌ Gosh, what’s with the bad attitude? Haha I made this list for fun and in my spare time. There’s no need to be a grammar nazi or get butt hurt about tailgates lol.
@Vladenschlutte‌ @beckstiles‌ No, the places I listed are just cheap and convenient options during the day. I usually don’t have time in between classes to go to the Gandy Dancer haha.
Thanks for reading everyone :)
