Everything i need to bring to dorm?

hey, im going to go dorm shopping soon

and i want to make sure i dont forget any small tiny things

besides big things like fridge, microwave

what other small things do I need to bring? (i.e. laundry basket, hangers)

also is there a trash can?

im driving there btw

this is by no means small but def. a printer-
from what i hear, it’s about 11 cents per page

and it’s not just the price-
you don’t want to go down to the library every single time you have to print something

That’s not always true. Most of the time it’s 9 cents. Check this: https://net-print.cit.cornell.edu/netprintx-cgi/qfeatures.cgi</a></p>

There is always a trash can in each room.

Assuming you’re anywhere except the townhouses…

Assuming you have a laptop. It is inconvenient to not have one unless you live in Dickson. I agree with the printer. Very useful.
i would not recommend bringing a microwave. Not sure about the townhouses but all the freshmen dorms otherwise should have communal microwaves nearby, down the hall or so. A microwave would also likely trip the circuit breaker in your room. The hallway ones might work but you’re not gonna move your microwave to the hallway everytime.

laundry basket is a must. hangers are not provided in general for the closets. If your laundry loads are small or anticipate handwash items, you could consider a small drying rack. Each room is provided with at least one garbage basket and one recycling basket. garbage bags are provided but you have to take out your own trash.

water filtering devices unless you’re going with water bottles. Most dorms have water fountains at least somewhere in them. small water heater if you plan on making hot drinks/tea.

shower sandals. because they’re communal and don’t ask, don’t tell. small electric fan could be useful at times.

storage containers possibly. closet space is random, depending on room. you could get a shallow one, a deep one, or a cabinet-closet sort of deal. Desks feature a keyboard drawer, two shallow drawers and one deep drawer. You should also get another cabinetwith three wide drawers. Newer dorms feature space under the bed.

message boards for your door if you’d like. Then drunk people hanging outside your door/friends can write stuff/doodles. very common.

Pillows are not provided. Bedsheets if you didn’t buy from Cornell. They provide desk lamps too so not really necessary to bring your own. never understood why some people brought lamps either.

starcraft 2 because it’s awesome.

^
lol @ starcraft 2
i would advise NOT bringing it, for fear of getting hooked :P

True… some students have been put on academic probation due to failing grades from DOTA…

but then again, even uncle ezra seems to play world of warcraft so perhaps some intense pc gaming has a rich tradition @ cornell…

well, with 13thousandish kids, there’s bound to be some video gaming. We digress from the thread topic.

If you’re the outdoor sports type bringing a soccer/basket/football is a good idea. borrowing from the campus is annoying sometimes. Table tennis paddles /balls are a must if you like that too. Poker sets if that’s how you roll. Also, RPCC has pool tables you can use but you have to rent equipment to play… unless you bring your own. Just remember, there’s a Target and Old navy in the relatively easy to get to mall (buses) for stuff you’ve forgotten. Like Starcraft 2.

lol @fallenmerc
People fail because of DotA? I’d like an introduction lol.

Btw, bring a ton of hangers.

oh, i actually have a relevant question:
what about bikes?
when i visited, it seemed to be a tad too hilly to ride with bikes around.
but after figuring out my schedule, it appears that i need some assistance in my transportation.
i know freshman ride free in the bus, but how useful would a bike be?

Tons of people own bikes on campus. It really depends on your schedule and personal preference. But keep in mind the campus is covered in snow for almost half of the school year.

what is the big red bike thing?
should i buy one on campus or bring my own?

Whoa, DotA, World of Warcraft, AND Starcraft 2. And I thought I had to quit all of it in college lol

People don’t usually stop doing the activities they enjoyed in HS if they have time/access to them in college… especially since computer games are easily transportable. That’s true for all universities. Sometimes though, the difference is that you do these activities drunk lol.

There’s lots of Wii, PS3, XBox around too here at Cornell. The community centers even host “Game Nights” where they set up DDR, Smash Bros, and RockBand for people to drop in and play.

that reminds me. all dorms have TV’s somewhere if you want to bring your gaming consoles and play

“Having to quit” depends on yourself (the schedule, the major, the lifestyle), the people you choose to hang around with and other activities you choose to pursue.

rlaehgund, Big Red Bikes isn’t a program you can buy bicycles through–it’s a bike share program (and one of the first free university ones, at that!). There are only going to be 20 bikes offered this fall (to be checked out at libraries for up to 24 hours), and they’re planning on adding another 40 in Fall 2011, but that’s still probably not enough for you to depend on the program for all of your on-campus bike transportation needs.

wow thanks for all the infos so far. btw i do live in dickson, can someone explain why “Assuming you have a laptop. It is inconvenient to not have one unless you live in Dickson.” cus i will live in dickson and my roomies and I are planning to get one. lol and i will be bringing in my PS3 and we are thinking about chipping in for a cheap tv(if anyones willing to sell pls let me know).

^ Almost everyone on campus has a laptop. (some have netbooks on top of their main).
The freshman dorms do not have computer labs in them, so not having your own laptop to use would be a big mistake. EXCEPT Dickson since it has a fairly large computer lab in a little annex-type room. The computers there are fast and reliable and the volume of computers there (30 ish? most freshman never find out about this lab even though they walk by the door everyday) make it perfect for lan parties. This lab is frequented by CS majors when assignments are due. At other times the lab sometimes ends up being gamers vs workers. Living in Dickson means you could probably get by without a laptop conveniently.

There are other computer labs on North in RPCC (a dozen or so but it’s been deemed a quiet lab where people actually do work and is usually busy) and in Appel (measly 5 computers). However, most would agree having a laptop and being able to work in your own room/friends’ room is much better.

I got an email about the Ryan Scholars program. Does anyone know what this is?
