I’ve been looking to apply to UT Austin for computer science and I’ve been stressing over my odds. My SAT was a 1500 and my WGPA is 4.26 (normal GPA 3.56) but my class rank is in the second quartile. My essays were pretty good and I’m the president of several clubs, as well as coming in 4th place at the Texas SkillsUSA competition, but I’m not liking the way the class rank is looking. Anyone want to give me some odds, I’ve no idea what to expect. Thanks.
Take the energy you are expending worrying about your rank and go find another U to love.
None of us can predict with any accuracy- but you will feel a LOT better once you have some “safer” options on the table!!!
Yeah, I’ve been applying to a couple others as well, A&M/Texas Tech specifically, it’s just tough being unsure
Give it your best shot and then let it go.
Make sure you’ve explored enough other options to have a good choice in April. Nothing you can do about your rank at this point it…
So for tech if you’re in the 2nd quartile you’ll get in due to your SAT.
Do you like Lubbock?
If not, there’s lots of OOS opportunities - some close like - not sure where you live - but an OU or OSU for example or an LSU. Or some farther and dirt cheap - you’d max out the scholarship at Alabama and be under $20K total.
Just make sure you have enough apples in the air - 3 or 4 is risky - although you auto qualify for Tech.
You can’t worry about “odds” - you can ensure you have some reaches, targets and safeties…or at least safeties. Your profile is your profile - and you can become great out of many a school.
Good luck.
Tbh, you have virtually 0 shot at UT with such a low rank and unweighted GPA, especially for CS. But take your shot.
Also A&M will be hard and pre admits meaning you still have to ‘compete’ to get in later. Have you considered Galveston?
If you really want CS find a direct admit school. Cheap ones are avail for you OOS and in state.
I think that CS at UT-Austin is a very, very, very high reach.
I don’t know your budget, but Texas has some very strong publics in CS. UT-Dallas, UT-Arlington, and U. of Houston are some others that I would take a good look at.
If you share your budget and what you’re looking for in a college, we can help you develop a balanced list of schools to apply to.
