LOL. My Godfather (and his two kids and their spouses) are all Maryland alum, but his Godfather is a Duke alum. Thanks, We will take a look at EIP.
Disneydad, do you think your son has time to do a sleepover with an honors student? My son who is a Freshman Honors, Mech E, did this last year and enjoyed it a lot. He also got to go to class with the student.
Maryland has been a great choice so far, but I am a Carolina grad, so I’m definitely biased against Duke!
That’s two against Duke…the two points that gave us that final victory…,sorry, being bad
How do you plan a stay over and attend a class? I was accepted into Honors, College of Engineering. I will be attending the Open House for admitted students. My other question is regarding housing. I am interested in Computer Engineering and have recently showed a little interest in cybersecurity. On your last post you stated staying in those dorms would be a good thing. However, what if you choose those living arrangements and realize you are not happy, can you request to return back to Honors Dorms? And why would someone choose to stay in one of these dorms instead of Honors Dorms?
What other responsibilities/requirements do you have to maintain by choosing to stay in a Program dorm? I just don’t want to overwhelm myself with too much where it will affect my engineering classes and work since I continue to hear the work load is hard.
Thanks for any advice you could offer.
Oh, good call,@collegenj, I should post about the engineering preview program! Sign up ASAP http://www.eng.umd.edu/prospective/preview
@Disneydad, this would be perfect time to visit!
@collegenj re your question on dorms …I’m a little confused…cybersecurity dorms are honors dorms so you wouldn’t have to return to honors dorms… there are just several honors dorms with various locations around campus. And I think what you are asking is if you decide to drop out of the program, you still will remain in the dorm you were assigned in - at least for the remainder of the semester/year - unless you specifically request to move -they won’t kick you out of your room if you choose to drop of the program midway. However, to be sure, you can double -check that when you attend an accepted student program.
Ugh, guys, so sorry…looks like those programs may be full already…? The form is “no longer accepting submissions”…so hurry up and sign up for regular admitted student days so you don’t miss that!
Sorry I realized I didn’t say University Honors compared to ACES dorms.
Also, did you find that you opted to take credit for your AP classes such as English literature and language and retake your Calculus classes even if you will receive credit for it. Some schools say its good to re-take it to.
@maryversity which programs?
The engineering preview
oh, thank you for all of your input. Its been very helpful.
we are planning our first visit in a few weeks. My d is accepted into engineering and scholars. We are OOS and will do an engineering tour as well as a campus tour. We are combining the trip with a previously planned trip. Any suggestions for things we should not miss on campus? This visit is after the deadline to rank the scholars programs. She is also accepted at her in state university but has yet to visit that but is hoping to venture out of state!
Collegenj, I believe my son stayed over with an honors student the night before the admitted students program. If you contact the Honors College, they can probably give you more info.
Regarding dorms, here is a chart with the programs and where they are housed.
http://www.honors.umd.edu/overview.php if you click on the Living and Learning Programs in the left column of the page.
Thank you. I will call next week. Hopefully there is still room. I really don’t like to miss school and I am already missing classes for admitted students day.
I was looking at that chart last night when I starting to look at distributing my points into which dorm.
@collegenj -just realized I missed your question on AP credit.
Yes! Take all the non-engineering AP credit u can without blinking an eye. As for engineering related courses, the only exception would be if you got a 4 on the calc then it can be debated if u have enough mastery for the long haul/application in the higher level engineering classes. If you have a 5, no worries.
@mybstnw hmmm not to miss on campus…the Dairy - best homemade ice cream ever (I liked it’s tradtional/original home but it’s since moved to a more “convenient” location in the Stamp Student Union)
If you are a parent, assume you are close-ish to my age and will remember St. Elmo’s Fire? Check out Fraternity Row across Route 1 - they filmed the frat scene on the campus at Maryland - look familiar?
McKeldin Mall is green space that runs between McKeldin library and the main administration building. It is really pretty and is displayed in Business Week’s list for top 16 most iconic campus spots http://www.businessinsider.com/most-beautiful-iconic-college-quads-2015-1 (just scroll down a bit)
The Eppley Rec Center is impressive - check out the climbing walls/ropes courses in the back
Let me think some more - they really do a good job with tours, though…
@collegenj If you attend a college program during school hours, you can get a note from the university visitor center proving that you visited/attended a program there on that date. Most high schools do accept that as an excused absence. If you are concerned, you can check with your guidance counselor ahead of time to confirm that.
Also, some worthwhile tips for off-campus grub

Also when visiting, if u have time, as engineering students it’s probably of interest to see just how close Goddard (as in NASA space center) is to campus in nearby Greenbelt…
@maryversity: A belated thank you for the information. It was extremely helpful! And we did manage to get over to the visitors center at Goddard as well.
