Ex-Dean Ayers next UVa president?

The next UVa president is to be announced tomorrow. The former Dean of CAS, Dean Ayers, and now the president of U of R, is supposedly that person.

I thought he would have been a good candidate, but since he only left a year ago, I didn't think Ayers would be in the running. I would think President Casteen would have told Ayers then that he was retiring.

From whom did you hear that?

I have no inside edge on this one, so I’m genuinely curious about the rumor. :)

Nooooo! Say it isn’t so! Hope this is just hearsay. First you ole Wahoos take our great football coach; it would be just downright mean to steal away Ayers, who is definitely UR’s best asset.

The announcement is supposed to come during a news conference at 1:00 today. Holding our breath here in UR alum land…

The Board of Visitors is meeting at 2:30 PM and their meeting will be streamed online.

[Next President, University of Virginia](http://www.virginia.edu/newpresident)

How exciting! :)

I heard the rumor about a week ago, but I didn’t think Ayers was likely because if so, he would not have left UVa. From today’s DP at [UVa settles on pick for new president | Charlottesville Daily Progress](http://www2.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/education/article/uva_settles_on_pick_for_new_president/50814/)

“Ayers, however, wrote in an e-mail Sunday that he never sought the job. “ As it turns out, it can’t be me because I was not a candidate for the position. I’m very happy at the University of Richmond, where we’re doing exciting things,“ Ayers said.”

This is almost typical coaching-type language where “I’m very happy” means “I’m leaving”.

However, since he says “I was not a candidate”, it does sound that he didn’t interview.

Given that there will be some type of announcement at 4:00, the new president must have already accepted the position and the vote by the BOV is merely a formality.

CBS is confirming that Ayers is staying at Richmond.

The names CBS mentioned (without any sources, of course): Gene Block, Condoleezza Rice, and Tim Kaine. Obviously, Gene Block and Tim Kaine have connections to UVa, but I don’t think Condoleezza Rice has had any involvement with UVa in the past. Tim Kaine also seemed pretty set on his next job being the chair of the DNC. Gene Block makes the most sense of the three.

The announcement should be around 2:30 PM. There’s a reception at 4:00 PM.

I hope you’re right re: Gene Block, Dean J!

Gene Block does make the most sense. Nice to have someone with a science background and who is experienced in the fund-raising/funding cut wars. Besides, Kaine and Rice are too polarizing when fund-raising prowess is critical.

A sociology professor?

just got this

We have some good secret keepers around Grounds. I didn’t hear a peep about Teresa Sullivan. There have been so few presidents at UVa that it’s exciting just to witness this!

If the stream isn’t working well, NBC and CBS are carrying the announcement live. :)

Seems there is a trend of more women getting these high level posts. (UM’s head is a woman) UM is well-run and a good place to look for talent. Wisconsin recently hired a woman with similar background from Cornell as Chancellor. In her first year she has done very well. Congrats.

Well, President Sullivan is friends with Elizabeth Warren, so I’ll give her a pass for now.

UVA’s first female president, yay.

^ agreed. Best wishes to her. Hope she does great things there in Cville.

UVA pulled a hat out of a rabbit in selecting Dean Sullivan. I wonder if the relatively
conservative UVA Alumni base is going to be as forthcoming with donations.

Teresa Sullivan is noted as a “leading scholar in labor force demography”.

Congratulations UVA on Dr. Sullivan’s appointment. This fits very well with Virginia leading the way on producing and maintaining a creative, productive and forward-looking workforce state. Right in line with the state’s governing goals. Should be an exciting fit, and an encouragement to UVA’s undergraduate and graduate student body.

Meh presidents. I don’t know what they do. Prolly something important, but Casteen was so behind the scenes, I didn’t know how to appreciate him.

University of Michigan Dr.Provost Sullivan named president of U. of Virginia
It is with deep pride and a tinge of sadness that I share the news that Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Teresa A. Sullivan today was named president of the University of Virginia.
Congratulations and best wishes to Provost Sullivan.
Go Blue!

Yes, but one trained at the University of Chicago (so she is almost an economist).

In the early 1990s, the University of Wisconsin had a female Chancellor (Donna Shalala) and the UW System had a female President (Katharine Lyall).
