Several months ago I took a mock SAT from this stupid SAT prep place, and I thought my handwriting for the essay was reasonably dark, but they said their scanners couldn't pick it up well enough.

Has anybody ever had their essay not scored because it was too light? Do you have to press REALLY hard??

Is what we get at collegeboard the same thing the graders see? That would be bad, since even though I write somewhat dark, it's really hard to read the scanned versions they put up. Is it the same one the graders see?

Yes, most (if not all, I'm not sure) graders just read your scanned copy. It's impractical to send essay sheets all over the US to different graders located at different locations.

If you're really paranoid about writing too lightly, get one of those artists pencils that have an number and then the letter B. The higher the number, the darker it will be. As in a 6B pencil is REALLY dark, but it's also really soft...bring a sharpener!

i brought a bunch of HB#2 pencils with me and the proctor stressed many times that it had to be HB#2 (a couple of ppl brought mechanical pencils w/ HB lead)...although, i thought u had to erase preti hard to make sure all of the marks were off...i dunt get it, why cant we use mechanical pencils to write the essay? when i use a regular pencil and the tip rounds off, my writing takes up more room and looks sloppy..

Just bring a #2 pencil with you and you should be fine =) I use mechanical pencils cause I HATE it when the tips get soft so it actually comes out pretty dark :)

Also... what is the paper like that the essay is written on? Because I wrote that on the really cheap quality paper in the Kaplan book, that makes your writing a bit lighter...
