what is the definition of a minor? is it a subject that you learn just for fun? do you get anything out of it in the end; as in can a 'minor' be used outside of school?

A minor is an area of concentration with fewer credits than a major. You could be a Biology major with a minor in chemistry, or an English major with a minor in theatre.

your major/minor dont have to be related in the slightest. i know someone who was a music major with a minor in botany just because she loved the botany classes. she has no plans whatsoever to do anything with her botany background. its not a waste, because you might as well take classes in something you enjoy.
and just for reference, at my school, a major was 10-14 classes and a minor was 4-6 classes, depending on the department.

i plan to major in economics and minor in astronomy, only becasue i love astronomy. what if they're 3 subjects which i like?

A minor does not do a whole lot for you, but they can be nice to have. When I registered at UCLA I discovered that I was only a few classes short of my Poli Sci minor, so I tacked it on.

Yeah, I've heard it is a cheaper way of a dual-major.

u can do double minor and a major..my mom(YES! my mom never got to go to college so after all these years she went back) has one its probably b/c of me and THE FACT THAt she has so many concentrations...that it will take 8 years to graduate at r local school( she will graduate..at the middle of my 11th grade- im in 10th and will graduate w/ a masters as I graduate HS...)

wow...cooL mommy...:D
