went back and read old posts that discuss how cc is used at different colleges. which ones read this message board? how do they use what they read. does anyone think it could have helped or hurt them?

College reps use CC for explaining the admission process (100% unofficial makes it easier, I guess); for advertizing their schools to some extent. As for using info about individual students - VERY unlikely. Simply because unless the person posts his social security, DOB and ful name on this site, there is a chance that a different person applying to the same school has similar stats and situation. Even the smallest schools get hundreds of applications. And if there is enough specific personal info to identify the person, there is always a chance that the info is provided by someone else with the intention to hurt the applicant.
A more reasonable concern is to be recognized by classmates, parents and teachers (if they happen to have college-bound students).

I've recognized classmates here, they don't really seem to mind.

I'd imagine that they're using our rejection letters and laughing at what we think of the admissions process.

To be serious, I'm sure reps are just trying to use it as an avenue to answer personal questions, and maybe find out more about their applicants anonymously.

I agree with Coop. I noted this to some extent in couple of school threads esp in LACs. But some of our info is unique tht we post here and I had asked about a very particular course instead of a generic one. Sigh (:. Easy target. I wished I didn't answer all the questions CCers asked me or found myself in any crazy arguments.
Maybe asking for chances is not a good idea. Sitting ducks. Next year I suggest u guys use Cappex and collegedata beforehand before coming here for chances. CC is a cool place but college admission people and professors are moving about too and sometimes it is too easy to forget that.

Unless you're stupid enough to make an account with your name, and you naively mention any of your overly unique achievements on this board, colleges won't be able to track you (even if they wish to). Check out this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/470497-clam-fart-oh-my-god-what-did-i-do.html

If the kid isn't lying, adcoms would be able to track him down.

UChicago's adcom used this board for some informal counselling: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/215393-watch-out-s-admissions-counselor.html

gouchicago, Well clam fart is certainly unique.

I would think that the ClamFart identity thing isn't a negative, though. I mean, at least the AdCom would be able to see why the student accidentally put that, since I'm sure they're wondering. xD
