Exaggeration in college essays?

I showed my mentor my essay about my internship and at first, he said, "great essay. you are a great writer" and then he told me that it was "pretty exaggerated". I don't get it.

Though i may not have "loved every single minute" of my experience, if i put that in, is that so wrong? I did like experience, minus several frustrating moments. I just didn't include all the "bad moments". The point of the essay is to self-promote, and doesn't that almost require exaggeration?

I really don't want to lie about this and have my mentor think that i am a liar.

could anyone answer this? i’m having a similar problem

Why exaggerate? You can love something but still have issues with it at the same time. It’s better to just be honest. You don’t have to talk about the bad experiences but you also don’t have to make it seem like it was the end all, be all

You can write about how much you love your internship experience except for that ‘few frustrating moments.’ You can also write about how you learn from both good and frustrating experiences.
