Exam credit for Spanish- how do you do it?

Right now I'm thinking I'm a CLAS bio major. I understand 6-8 hours of spanish credit is needed to fulfill the requirements. I'd like to skip spanish altogether. If I take the SAT II's this fall (only offered Oct-Dec.) and pass, will I be able to skip the spanish requirements for CLAS? When do the results have to be in to qualify? I asked a similar question earlier and someone said the results need to be in before the end of fall semester? Is that true? Anyone have any experience on any of these issues? Thanks.

I’m in CLAS too (beginning as a transfer in the fall) and was also wondering about this language requirement. From what I understand the SAT II test can be used to fully or partially test out of the requirement, depending on what proficiency your results show.

Other than that, I don’t know much about it. This seems to be the last hurdle for me in making my fall schedule because I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to Gainesville before August to take the test so I’m not sure if I should register for a language just to play it safe.

I just went to preview. They told me that I have to take the proficiency test the first week of classes. If i test out then I don’t have to take any foreign language classes. The results are automatic as soon as you finish the test.

Would a passing score on the CLEP exam be sufficient to fulfill this requirement, as well?

KSP, from what I’ve been able to find on the website, it seems that if one gets over a 430 on the SAT II, it should be enough to waive the CLAS spanish requirement. I think the SAT II isn’t offered till October 10th or 11th, though, and I think this would still be ok, but all this is what I’m trying to confirm. I don’t know who else to ask.

Anyares, I did not hear of any spanish proficiency test one can take the first week of class. This is not the SAT II’s? Do you know anything more about it? Any info on the website? It would be easier than having to wait till October to take the SAT II’s.

Albert, I had the same question. However, I was confused when it said something like it would fulfill the gen ed requirements, but the credits wouldn’t go to one’s major? Did you see anything like that?

I’m still confused, I guess. Wish there was an easy way to find out for sure. Thanks.

I also heard that they offer the proficiency testing during the first week to handle this type of thing (though, I’m not sure if it’s the SAT II test or another test). From what I understand, they emphasize doing it during that first week so you’re still able to add or drop the language classes depending on how well you do.

What I’m going to do is go to the Spanish department and have a proficiency test/interview with one of the advisers there. They will ask me a bunch of questions in Spanish. I will also have to read a couple of passages and write as well, both in Spanish. If you pass, they will present you a proficiency letter.

I called today to try to get the answer. I spoke with the person who answered the phone in the Spanish department (there was someone in the background feeding her the answers). She also referred me to those websites, anyares- the AT.UFL.edu and then clicking on testing. It’s what we thought. You have to take the SAT II. If you get over 430, you can exempt the CLAS requirements for Spanish. At least that’s what she said. You can find that info on the last site anyares posted. I had never seen that one before, so thank-you, anyares! Apparently, she said there was no hurry in taking the test. There is no set deadline. I plan on taking it in October.

KSP and danny, maybe the proficiency test is for spanish placement? I don’t want to have to take spanish at all. I hope this is all accurate information we have. Thanks, everyone.

no prob hun! hope it helped everyone!

I just found this link with every possible way you could fulfill the requirement for CLAS.

Alright, so SAT II test it is.

Thanks for all the answers and such, guys.

Garden91,
The concept behind taking the test at the Spanish Department is to not take any Spanish ever again.lol. So basically, if you are fluent in Spanish, then you’ll do fine with the interview and be exempt from taking Spanish courses.

Albert, that was a great site also. Thanks. I think we’ve got the answer now. SAT II it is. Danny, I wish I were fluent in Spanish, but I’m not. I did take 3 years in HS, but I am in no way fluent. However, I prefer to take other things besides spanish if possible, so I’m going to give the credit by exam a try. Thanks, everyone!
