Examples of Work-Study jobs?

Work-study was included in my financial aid package and I was wondering what types of jobs were typical for USC work-study students. Are there jobs that are known to be less intensive than others? Also, if you do participate in work-study, how has it affected your grades or limited your ability to participate in other social organizations/extracirriculars? Thanks!

There are plenty of desk jobs where you basically sit there and mostly have free time until your shift is over. I’d check out the job fair during the first week of classes.

Hi!

I have a work study job at the Marshall School of Business. It’s wonderful lol. Like War Chant said, you basically just sit there. I get a lot of my homework & internet surfing done at work haha. But make sure you keep a good attitude & don’t get the entitled feeling that some work-studies get—sometimes it’s pretty easy to get used to just sitting around, so when someone actually asks you to do something, some act annoyed lol.

It really doesn’t make any sense actually sense we just sit on our arses most of the time haha.

Try to search ahead of time if you can. Look on the class pages on FB, a lot of upperclassmen will post job openings that their offices have. And if you can’t find one immediately at the beginning of the year, keep looking throughout the semester. A lot of spots open up

Here are some of the work study jobs I had as an UG:

Graphic designer for Thornton
USC ReadersPlus elementary school tutor
Personal assistant for an anthropology professor
USC Campus Cruiser dispatcher and driver

Other jobs my friends had:
ProTools and Final Cut lab monitors
Receptionist
Tour guide
Research assistant
Usher for Bovard
Stage and lighting tech for Program Board

There’s a wide range of opportunities out there; keep an eye on the USC student job boards and attend the work study fair and you’ll find something you like.

Having a work study job didn’t impact my schoolwork or social life. Most of the office jobs are during the day and finish up by 6pm. You basically can schedule your work around your classes or on your free days. It was nice having money to live off of for the month that I could spend as I pleased.
