I want to do 17 units over summer. But I can't add any more because I'm already at 13 units. Is there some form to fill to request for more units? (Most of them are P/NP)

Are you positive that you want to do 17 units? Isn’t that equivalent to like 34 units in any regular semester?

8 of those are letter grade. The other two are breadth (one is a language class, which IMO is more like 3 units), so I’m not too concerned… and they’re in different sessions.

But I might drop. I just want to see how it goes.

I almost died when I took 7 units last summer.

Isn’t that really expensive?

plus check dates carefully. Many of the sessions overlap for some number of weeks.

is there a ratio of what summer units are equivalent to versus regular semesters? Like, every 2 summer units is equal to 5 fall units?

Yeah, it’s expensive, but still cheaper than taking them in regular fall/spring. And the overlaps are fine… I think it’s an overlap of two weeks?

if you do short sesh and longest sesh, then it’s an overlap of 2 weeks. be aware though, 13 units IS a hell lot of work. I mean even if it’s P/NP, you still need to dedicate some time to get a P.

Would you consider doing 29 or 30 units in a regular semester?

Did you make this thread just to brag???

@KnitKnots: No. It’s an honest question.
@rider730: Yes, if lots of them were P/NP. I’d never do 30 letter-graded units… (though I know someone who did 29 letter-graded, but he’s a superhuman while I’m not).

Look, guys, I’m just asking a simple question. I know it’s crazy, BUT I may not even take so many units. I want to see if I can handle it, but if I can’t, I’m ready to drop the classes by the refund deadline.

Thanks for the concern though, it’s nice to have people who care :)

I’m signed up for 14 units, it definitely isn’t crazy if you spread it out over the different sessions. I’m taking 2 major courses during Session C, and I’m taking a course over Session A (only 2 weeks of overlap) and a 2 unit course. So it shouldn’t be too bad.

The only courses that I’ve had over summer that absorb a lot of time are writing courses. I think you can do 17 especially if you have them split up well.

As for the technical aspects of adding additional classes try contacting your advisor, and explaining to them that you will be able to handle that many units, based on how they’re spread out and how you’ve done in the past few semesters.

I don’t know why you guys are just making up estimates for how hard summer classes are.
There are 12 weeks in summer session. There’s about 16 in the regular year. 16/12=4/3.
If you want to be more exact you can look at each session or overlap period, but unless you’re taking all of your classes in one session it’s not going to be 2X.

so it’s kind of like 24 units? I guess that’s pretty hard, but it’s not ludicrous.

It would be best to hear from someone who has taken >>7 units in summer and also has taken a high load in a regular semester, otherwise we are all just making assumptions and projections which might be over or under estimating the workload.

Well, even with 7 units last summer I was watching about 4.5 hours of lectures per day, finishing and turning in a math assignment almost everyday, and read about 120+ pages off a textbook per week. I suppose if i squeezed out all social activities, sleep, and a part of my soul, I might be able to do 30 units.

Well, if it helps, I’ve taken 19(+1 seminar) regular semester and 7 in session A only. According to the unit conversion I suggested 7->~19. But I think the 7 was a little harder.

So perhaps you can try a conversion of X (17 or 18)/session length?

Anyways, for random details:
-The 19 units were technicals, however 2 of the classes were Physics 7B and I had already done AP Electromagnetism, and Stat 134; I had already done CS70.
-The 7 units were non-technical (Rhetoric R1B and Cog Sci C100)

I think what rider suggested would be best. But my summer sounds like it’ll be like demoz’s. indiscreetmath, that comes up to 17 regular semester units for letter grade, and about 11 units of P/NP (in the current 13-unit schedule). 17 letter graded units are fine.

11 units P/NP… well, on that note, I really don’t think French 2 is worth 11 units. I took French 1 last semester and it felt more like a 2 unit class than the 5 units it’s supposed to be. Especially when you compare it to the work required of technical classes. I’m assuming French 2 is basically a continuation of French 1.

I think people should stop hating on the OP, it really depends on the classes themselves.

I did 8 units 2 summers ago in only session D and did well in both classes with very little effort. And I’m not exactly that smart.

I had 8 units but 1 was p/np and it wasn’t bad
