Exceeding the Unit Cap Dilemma

Hello everyone. Well I only discovered today that there is a freaking unit cap of 80 semester /120 quarter units (I called the admissions office at UC Davis and she told me the cap was 129 quarter units, which is 86 semester units, so now I'm confused, and raised my hopes) and when I asked my counselor a few months ago, she said the number of units I take does not matter, which was complete bull. However, I would like to say that she is a very kind counselor, in case she reads this lol. Anyways,

I attended UC riverside for about a year and a quarter, withdrew voluntarily (left on good standing, left for personal reasons) and now I am attending community college in hopes of transferring to UC Davis.

The Problem is, I had a total of 58 quarter units when I left UCR, which converts to 38.686 semester units, and for Fall 2011 I completed 13 units, currently enrolled for 16 units for Spring Semester of 2012. I am planning to drop One class which is 4 units (Speech class). The only reason I enrolled in speech is because it offered 4 units and was an easy A. I need to accumulate as many units as possible to get A GOOD REGISTRATION date for the upcoming semesters, but now that won't happen because I'm going to drop Speech. (Community college criteria for distributing registration dates is *****en retarded, but that's a whole nother topic).

So my question is, should I just complete the "highly recommended courses" listed on assist.org and ignore the other courses to keep in the boundaries of the 80 unit cap? That seems like the only option for me. Thanks everyone, sorry for the long post.

If I were in your position I would just ask a UC Davis counselor or admissions person. Although you may get some good or even correct info on the off chance you screw this up it could make things really hard for you (well by the sounds of it not could but will).

If I were you I would complete the recommended courses on assist and the cap only applies to uc transferable courses. Take some pe (assuming there not transferable) classes to get a better registration…

I had the same thing happen with UCSB, but I think I’m going to be ok and have already appealed. They have a cap of 135 quarter units and I have 140. I attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts for one year and with that and my CC credits it was too high. BUT, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts is only a 2 year school and they only offer an A.A., so I think I’m going to be ok. I was told that UCLA, Berkeley, and Irvine don’t care. Does anyone know if that is true?
