I wrote an essay for a scholarship application with a limit of 200 words, but mine is 209. I really can't cut anything more out, I asked my teacher for help and she couldn't either, without taking away from it.

Should I leave it as is or omit a sentence, even though it would take away from the context?

That’s fine, leave it in.

Are you uploading the essay electronically? If so, they may screen by word count and not consider anything over. If you are sending an old fashioned printed copy, they are unlikely to go through the effort of counting out each word manually - and they are unlikely to notice the difference between 209 and 200.

On the other hand, I am of the opinion that there is always something that can be cut and in most cases, the message will be improved by the editing.
Have you heard the urban legend of Hemingway’s six word short story…“For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn”

I am uploading it electronically. I was able to omit one word, but that is all. I really hope the remaining 8 words will still be considered.

@jinx123445 I would recommend sending it to someone here on CC. You may not be able to find 8 words to get rid of, but I’m sure someone can! Probably not me lol, try parents, another teacher, etc.

Deadline is today!! If anyone would be willing to help me please comment, I would really appreciate it!

I’m wiling to give a try.

Ask and thou shall receive :)
