I didn’t get any emails like this… Are you all regular decision applicants?

Does everyone get the email to apply for the Global Gap Year Fellowship?

momoftwoinNC: Did your daughter also get into Honors Carolina?

No, but it wasn’t one of her top choices when she submitted her completed “opportunities” survey. But as I said, there was another student in her graduating class who was invited to Honors Carolina but did NOT receive the “opportunities” letter.

MomoftwoinNC. When did you get the response about what your daughter got? The letter said that they would let people know in April.

She got the email about the Kenan-Flagler program in early March, I think. She didn’t get the letter for the summer study abroad until mid-April. I guess it depends on what you get matched to.

^thanks…

Has anyone out there filled out the Excel form and heard back?

Nada…

I’m sure that putting Honors Carolina at the top of your list will give you a stronger consideration into that program, but I don’t think that Excel@carolina is the primary way that UNC picks kids for Honors Carolina. The only reason I say this is because I got an email from Honors Carolina inviting me to join before I got anything from excel, so I think that they have separate processes for picking members.

It will be interesting to see what happens. It strikes me that the honors program would be a given for every Excel recipient who selected Honors as one of their 5 top choices since the other choices appear to be more selective or costly to the school.

Hey, I just got an invitation to Honors Carolina. I was wondering if that invitation was separate from Excel@Carolina, because I put down Honors as my first choice. Does that mean I’m not going to get anything else now?

^It’s the minimum you’ll get, and that’s all you can know at this point I’d say if you’re only going to get one program you’ll probably wind up with Honors Carolina, and if you’re going to get more than one you should get Honors anyway.

Dreams. How do you receive the invitation? By email or snail mail?

I received it snail mail today (I live in NY so postage is much slower than in-state), and I got the e-mail about 3-4 days ago.

Has anyone else heard from Chancellor’s Science Scholars yet? I’m curious to know exactly what the planned finalist weekend is about, but my mail usually runs two weeks behind my email for colleges :(

My son got an invite yesterday via snail mail. I’m curious though. On the unc website it’s says

“Each year the program welcomes 20 outstanding first-year students talented men and women, specifically those who are first generation college students, low-income students, and students of color who wish to spend four years at Carolina collaborating with one another, working with world-renowned faculty, and preparing themselves for lives as leaders in the sciences. Scholars spend six weeks in intensive study at Carolina before the fall of their first year, benefit from in-depth advising from faculty mentors, and receive funding for one summer of independent research. Scholars also receive specialized guidance in preparing for an advanced degree in the sciences”

We are not low income, first gen, low income or of color.

How many students do they take into the honors program from excel? When will we find out if we got out choices?

bump…

Well according to the letter Honors Carolina sent me by mail, it states “only two percent of students who apply to UNC are considered for Honors Carolina, and only 400 students from our first-year class of 4,000 become members of this special academic program.” I guess if you guys didn’t get this letter, then I didn’t get into Honors Carolina through excel and I got in through the Honors Program…? I never could figure out where my honors acceptance came from.
