Hello! I'm looking to transfer into a rigorous American Studies program, preferably in New England or the Middle States. (I'd also be willing to consider eastern Virginia or Washington, D.C., but it's not my preference.) I've found it pretty difficult to find any information about the best American Studies programs on-line, so I'm hoping some of you have some input.

I know a lot of people mention Georgetown's program, but I visited Georgetown a few years ago and really did not like it, so I don't think that's something I'm interested in. I would also really like to stay out of New York City. I'm looking for a college that provides a lot of independent study and research opportunities, very accessible faculty (I work very well one-on-one; I need good office hours), discussion-based upper-level courses (sitting in rows and looking at a blackboard doesn't appeal to me), and a down-to-earth student body. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If it helps, some more info about me and what I'm looking for is here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/721527-aimed-way-too-low-try-again.html
