I just realized that some of my schools require only one recommendation. But I send 2 recommendations to all of my colleges (plus counselor's stuff). For those colleges that only asked for one but received two, are they going to read both of them or pick one and toss the other?

Well, it seems to me like they might read it. I don't know about that. But I'm sure it won't hurt you, having two. They are probably aware that someone who is applying to a few colleges might have to write two for at least one. One or two of the colleges I applied to asked for only one, but my school sent two to all of them. I wouldn't worry, I don't think.

When they say you shouldn't have excessive applications, they mean not to send 4 or 5 when they ask for 1, or to send 8 when they ask for 2. The record I've heard is something like 33 at Vanderbilt. They denied him just for sending in that many.

If you send one more than required, no one is going to deny you. Just don't send 12.

If they ask for 1 and you send 2, they will read the 2nd one too because one extra letter isn't going to take them forever.

Now if you send in 3-4 when they asked for 1, they'll just pick one randomly most of the time I believe.

My advice is to send in 2 if they ask for one but make sure the recommendations both don't say exactly the same things. Make sure both teachers write something special.

For serious? 33???!?????!?!?!?!?!!!???? That's like... all my coaches, teachers, instructors and janitors combined. Was that person out of his mind

I think he was desperate for admission. Kind of backfired though.

It can't be true.... I don't believe it. I mean you can't be that desperate to get into Vandy...

lol
