Exchange Rates :(

Has anyone been following the US dollar vs the Canadian Dollar.

I have been planning on transferring to Canada and everytime I calculate the fees the C$ has been gaining on the US$. Its gettin really lame now and while they can keep the cost constant the exchange rate is making it more expensive.

Just as an example, I remember applying to Acadia University back in high school (2004) and the $25 candian application fee was like 18 or 19 US$. Now it is like $22. Its not like we are rich so every cent (or fraction of a cent) the C$ gains on the US it is a larger increase when you start talking about Tuition and living expenses..

BTW the Bahamian dollar = the US dollar (and is used quite alot here) so when I say US i am referring to local currency.

thats an interesting development.

The good thing is that a moderatly falling dollar will benefit the U.S. economy overall and any economy that uses the dollar. The reason is that US dollar goods will appear cheaper making exports go up and imports going down creating more jobs among other things. Unfortunately for you, the exchange rate will most likely continue to drop some unless a change in econmic policy is made. The drawback of course is going to a foreign country, but I don't think anyone wants to go back to the Carter economy when we did have a good exchange rate.

so, basically, staying in the u.s. would be the economic way to go.

but is that the way you want to go?

I feel bad for the American students that do a JYA or Graduate degree in the UK. The exchange rate is terrible for them. I live in an Euro country and it is already expensive.

Dont worry, the American Doller will become stronger as intrest rates rise and since they are already rising the doller should start to gain in value in the next year or so.

if you know that you'll end up in canada and have the funds to do so, you could always exchange the money now, so if it goes up more you'll have locked yourself in at whatever rate you paid, and you could even trade it back to make a little profit if you want... that's as long as your willing to risk its value plumiting... but still, exchanging now is always an option.

the american dollar will fall against all eastern world countries. canada, its should stay stable.
