Exchange Student as a HS Senior

My son was just accepted yesterday by Rotary for an exchange next year. Although it is not guaranteed quite yet, it looks like he will go to Germany.

Brian was a sophomore last year and applied for early graduation so that he would have senior status this year and be allowed to take the required American Government class. He will still need to take senior English in summer school, but will walk graduation in May and can enjoy his exchange with no worries about fulfilling the requirements to graduate here. He has also gotten to enjoy the recognition of being a senior, so he won't feel like he missed out on the best year of high school.

We are thrilled with the organization and support the Rotary organization supplies, not to mention the lower cost. I would highly recommend it, though it may be a little late now for kids wanting to go next year if they haven't yet applied.

Hi, I am interested in doing an exchange my senior year. Do you think it’s possible to do so?

We hosted a YFU student from Germany and she did a junior year here but went back to school and did Junior year again.

You could also apply to college and then request to defer a year to do a year abroad.

Yes, it’s possible, but it does take some advance planning. Talk to your counselor about how you’re set in terms of graduation requirements. Take your SATs in your junior year, you can always retake them while you’re abroad. (Though check beforehand to make sure they’re given in the country you’re interested in.) You can apply to colleges from overseas.

Also note that sometimes US Army bases abroad and international schools administer the SAT/ACTs.
