Has anyone here ever done that for one of their years in high school? I'd be interested to hear about it.

Oh. If you're going to do it, do the summer ones. =\ The ones that take a full year.. :( people forget you and you miss all of your television.

Do you know that from experience? I don't know, I think I'd prefer a school year one, but I'm just playing around with the thought right now and would like to hear about it.

My two best friends are on exchange right now--Ghana and Chile. I miss them SO much! But both are having an incredible experience and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Does anyone know if you can still take APs while you are on a foreign exchange program? I would love to go, but I am worried about not getting the AP credits I would like to/ plan on getting.

Why let AP classes hold you back from such an amazing opportunity? I wish I would have studies abroad junior year. There were 2 German girls who came to our school last year and they said it was great and made a lot of friends. (Of course, they already spoke good English).

If anything couldn't you just take the AP test anyway even without the class and self study anything not covered in the class?

my friend is for the second half of this year--in spain

Yeah, I've basically decided that if I was to go on a trip (I really want Brazil in this case, and I've read about how extremely lax education is over there), I'd try and graduate earlier, AP classes aside.

For that I'd need 2 English classes (sophomore now), finished math, 1 more social studies, finished science, economics, and government.

I could easily take those online and then I'd graduate.

But I want to study abroad because it's the type of thing I want to do in the future. Travel and change the world, make money, help developing third world countries, etc. mainly in Latin America. Especially Brazil, the racism over there and horrible economic distribution makes for 34% of the population below the poverty line, many of them living on less than $50 a month.

So yeah, there's always time to take college classes in college.

Post #2...what the heck. miss all your TV? Anyway...check out these links:

Aaand there are lots of threads on this. Just search "high school (youth) exchange" or "high school study abroad."

I did a summer one and it was the best experience of my entire life. I wish I could have done a year or at least a semester, but I found out too late.

I'm finding that that is to be the case for me too unfortunately. Plus, I'd probably have to repeat a year, which I absolutely refuse to do. I'd rather throw myself from the highest point on earth in hopes for a slow, painful death than do that. [/scariness]

Anyways, what program did you do it through?

I am DYING to study abroad next year!
I am this close to convincing my dad to let me go, my mom is all for it.
It's a once in a lifetime opportunity...

Keep me posted. I think if I spent like my whole summer doing online classes I'd be able to do a year. Have you researched any programs yet?

I've actually applied with AFS, and nominated myself for one scholarship, and had my teacher nominate me for another one.

I have until January 8th, but my dad thinks it would be better to go in college. I'm shooting for a year, but a semester is better than nothing!

Talking with my schools was difficult. I'm at a freshman campus, so I had to go to my future high school, then come back, then go...and they have poor communication, so times were tough. But it's all settled out! I have a way to get credit (painful lol) and we arranged so I would be able to do a full IB Diploma and graduate on time with my class! And my GPA would not be affected! :D

I went through Youth for Understanding, it was very well organized, and everything just fell into place really nicely. I would definetly recommend it.

What country did you go to? How did your fluency in the language improve? Mind just giving a little summary of everything? :D

I really would love to study abroad for my sophmore year, but would it be practical to get the following classes completed abroad: Equivalent of 10th grade English, Spanish 2, Algebra 2, and World History?

I found that all I'd really need to take to keep up in school is AP US History, AP English Lang, and Spanish II. I'm already 2 years ahead in math, so I'd end up just taking AP Calc / AP Stats my senior year. And science, I already have 3 credits in, which is all that is needed to graduate. I'd end up taking 2 AP sciences my senior year anyways.

So no problem :D

i'm exchanging in Madrid/Barcelona summer of `09 :D

I'm going to be an exchange student with Rotary next year. The deadline has already passed, but you could still try to contact your local club if you're interested. Some other reputable programs are AFS, AYUSA, and YFU. The deadlines for those programs are later, and you're more likely to get your first choice country, but they are also more pricey. Rotary is only the cost of a plane ticket and a few other small fees, and you get an allowance every month of about $100.

I believe that most people do become fluent in the language of the country they stay in. The only exceptions are places where the majority of the people speak English (e.g. Denmark, Sweden, etc.).

Don't let the thought of missing AP credits get in the way of this kind of an opportunity. If you think about it, there's no other time in your life that you get this kind of experience. If you're serious about it, talk to your counselor to see what your school's policy is. I am getting credit for all of my classes, but I won't be getting a grade, so it won't affect my GPA.
