this question is self-explanitory for those students who do varsitiy sports...

BUT what do most of the students, who dont play varsity sports, do for exercise (or do they do anything)?

is it common to go to the gym and lift (or to run on a tredmill/ride stationary bike)?
does going to play ultimate, or an occasional game of tennis enough for most people?
at top LACs do you have time to exercise on a regular basis?
what do you do in the winter?

just wondering, because lately ive been going to the gym/riding my bike a lot (mainly because my friends rarely like to do anything besides play video games or watch the world cup)...

thanks for the input.

Many people I know go to the gym on a regular basis. It's not hard to randomly find an hour a few days a week to just go work out. Elliptical machines are popular, especially among the sorority crowd, but I mean, everyone uses a bit of everything. Guys, of course, were always in the gym lifting. I find machines are a good way to workout because, well, it's covered in student fees for the most part so its essentially free.

However, I do know many guys who would go to the gym to play pickup basketball, go outside to play ultimate, whatever. IM's are usually pretty popular if you're into that as well. In the winter everyone would just go play basketball at the gym. Easy enough.

You'll definitely find time...just do what you like.

I'm was a part-time student last year, and before tennis season started, I went three times a week.

There's always a lot of students at the beginning of both semesters, especially at the beginning of spring semester (New Year's Resolutions). You can spot out the really serious ones because you keep seeing them throughout the semester.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person I know who doesn't ever go to the gym (I just go running outside instead). So while I've never been in the gym I always see people going in and out of it and I always hear most people I know talking about going. It's open late so lots of people are there in the evenings/at night, lots of people will go during finals as a stress-relief break. Lots of people will also be out jogging during nicer weather.

I would say a higher percentage of girls go to the gym than guys, but I go to a techie sort of school and we have more guys here anyway, and a lot of them seem to be the sort that would rather sit around and play video games than do anything athletic.

well at the 24hr fitness i go to it is usually about 70-80% guys.

strange.... in my school's gym, it's almost always the women on the cardio machines and the guys doing the lifting.

Don't worry, do what you need to do to stay in shape :) There's always company (even at 6 AM on weekdays). Just really avoid the afternoon/early evening crowd if you don't want to wait for your turn.

I used to hate the fact that my school has PE requirement but now I appreciate it. 3 days a week of PE 4 days at the gym. I am determined not to gain the freshman 15 :)

a lot of people at my school would go to the gym.

i went to the gym/exercised more when i was at school than i ever had done when i was at home. plus, second semester i participated in a club sport.... i felt like i spent a large amout of my time working, but i always managed to find time to go. it's really a nice break from working, lets you clear your head and get those endorphins going :) my friends were really into going to the gym too... yes, the elliptical was definitely my favorite :) but i also did weights sometimes, and the treadmill and the bike.

Last year, I always saw a TON of people at the gym. Guys and girls were on the treadmills and bikes, but it was always just guys in the weight rooms. I went for a few months, but after about the end of March, I just got too lazy and tired and quit going (I spent most of my spare times hanging out with friends or sleeping). I'm really going to try to go more this fall, since I'm going to try to go more during the summer too. I'm just... lazy. Again. I would really like to lose some more weight though, so I just need some motivation to go.

everybody I know (nobody is on sports teams) talks about going to the ARC all the time. (Activities & Recreation Center). The ARC has a ton of new workout machines, a track for you to run on indoors, and workout classses you can take (everything from hip hop dancing to spinning) - and it's free to students. Personally, I don't like gyms & working out. My workout is running the half mile from class to the bus home in 5 minutes or less.

it is harder to exercise in college because you're busy with schoolwork and when you're not many times the last place you want to go is the gym. id say i went 3 days a week sometimes i loved it there whenever i went. our school has yoga, and pilates and fun stuff like that. i also did rock climbing (free on tues & wed nights) which was really fun. if you want to exercise you'll def have the time to the gym is open really early and closes at like 1 so you can always go there basically.

Many of my friends bike and run outside because we live in GA and it is nice all year long for the most part. I am going to get a bike because the campus is huge and then I can just ride aroung for exercise as well. When I went on a college visit the only people in the gym were super buff and all athletes so I do not plan on going there because it is just annoying.

I've been to the gym once just because I run outside instead. I go to a LAC in Maine, and even in December and February I ran outside--I just bought warm running clothes and ran in layers. It was cold, but worth it--being outside is nice especially when you need to clear your mind. You could go to the gym, too. College students tend to be pretty health and looks conscious so you'd definitely not be alone.

my problem is that i am super skinny, but i go to 24 hour fitness 3-4 times /week to lift (to try and get a little bigger, hasnt worked yet), and i dont feel bad/embarrassed (about being skinny) because its just older guys whom i dont know. but in college i am worried that the buff guys will just make fun of me if i go and lift...what to do, what to do.

Just go exercise. Who knows, maybe those 'buff guys' will give you some pointers on how to lift correctly.

Edit: To clarify: not saying here you DON'T lift correctly. x_x Hope it didn't come off that way...I meant in case you are doing something differently.
