I have a question: How come more people here were accepted at Exeter than at Andover, while the stats show that Exeter has a lower admittance rate? I'm just curious 'cause the discrepancy seems a bit odd to me. Does anyone have any ideas?

on CC, there is only a select sampling of applicants to all of these schools. for that reason, it is inaccurate to draw conclusions based on what we hear on here.

but yeah, it does seem a bit weird.

Also while Exeter may have a lower acceptance rate, how much lower? A percent or two? It's not like it is a 10% difference.

Maybe less people applied to Andover.

Maybe the Exeter folks enjoy spending time on the computer, while the Andover kids are outside being athletic! Just a random thought....no flames, please!

haha. i was accepted at exeter with FA i needed, and waitlisted at andover.

boo x - actually, I hadn't thought about that. Good point. And yes, us Andover kids spend aall our time outside playing sports...well, sort of :)

Not to spoil your "athletic Andover" kids theory, but as I recall, last year there seemed to be an abundance of kids who were getting Andover acceptance packages on the CC boards on March 10th. So, perhaps this year it seems a bit different, but I can assure you, the kids that go to Andover and the kids that go to Exeter ( and Choate, Hotchkiss, Brooks etc ) are all pretty much the same!!

You know I was teasing.

Why does being smart and athletic have to be mutually exclusive?

I don't think anyone said/implied that.

I have it from good sources that:

Exeter's acceptance rate was approximately 13.5% (this year)

whilst according to the Andover website, this year Andover's acceptance rate was 20%.

This is probably because of Exeter's new financial aid system.

Alcedias: what is your good source? I can imagine that Exeter's acceptance rate was lower this year, but I would be surprised if it went from 21% down to 13.5.

According to the Facts booklet on the Exeter website, for 2007 they admitted 21% of 2,446 applicants (514 students). If they admitted the same number this year, then 13.5% of X = 514. Solving for X gives 3,800. I find it hard to believe that their completed applications grew by 1,400 in one year. Not impossible, just hard to believe.

"Of the 2,678 who have applied for admission, 18 percent have been accepted to become part of Exeter’s community."

(from Phillips Exeter Academy | New Crop of Students ‘Experience’ a Day on Exeter’s Campus)

I have it from Andover's website (go to the home page, click on "congratulations newly admitted students," then on "introducing the new class," and it's written somewhere there) that 19.5 of the applicants were admitted this year there, so really I guess it's a difference of what, 10 students?

Colllegeprof: Thank you....I had seen that news item on Exeter's site before, and couldn't come up with it late last night, hence my resorting to a mini-algebra lesson.

So, fellow posters, as I have stated elsewhere on other posts, if you are going to give us a statistic, you need a citation!

Overheard at a local (to Exeter) hair salon from an Exeter adcom member: 1 of every 10 boys were admitted this year. That's 10%, folks, if you are a boy or the parents of - congratulations to all who made it against those odds!

I'd say that was probably 1 in 10 who applied is attending, not was accepted.

Even if that were true, it's not taking into consideration that Exeter also accepts girls.

I understood it to mean that there were many more boy apps than girl apps, and in order to keep it a 50/50 class the percentage rates were much lower for boy acceptances. Perhaps the staff member misspoke, but it was pretty clear that they were overwhelmed not just with the sheer numbers of apps, but boy apps in particular. I think the 10% number makes sense if it was, say, a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio of girls and boys applying. Who knows.
