I'm a west coast parent who has a child applying to these boarding schools for the 10th grade year. I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Reading all these posts...WOW!!!I feel like I am so behind. My child researched these schools and chose to apply these schools. He told me one day that he had to take this ssat test and that I had to drive him to the test...I did'nt even know he was applying until he told me to write those parent essays.He has always been self motivated, gets good grades, scored a 99 on the ssat. What are his chances?

He probably has a good shot at any of those schools. Remember, no matter what you read on CC about it being impossible to get into these schools, it’s just high school and as long as your son’s essays/interview show how self-motivated he sounds in your words and as long as he comes off as an interesting person to the interviewer, he’ll probably get in. These schools also try to achieve geographic diversity so that might help you too since you’re not from New England.

Have you spoken with your child about the life and culture of boarding schools? Do you and your child well understand the pros and cons of BS? Are you willing to pay some near $50k per year as a tuition payment? Although I am sure you guys went through all of the above but you sounded like you were not aware of your child’s applying to those schools.

What is the Life and Culture of Boarding Schools?

Those schools have admit rates in the teens. That’s a fact not just something swirling around cc. And most of their applicants are well qualified. Impossible to really chance anybody, but sounds like your son has a fighting chance

@Dadwoclue,

Since you mention you are concerned about the cost and your son popped the whole BS idea on you, did you apply for Financial Aid?

I didn’t mean that it’s easy to get in. I’m just saying that it’s not like applying to Harvard and that it is not as hard as it seems on this website. I know people who got in who are not the top in their schools. These are middle school students applying and if a kid is as mature and self motivated as this one is he has a good shot
