Got the idea from the "ask a teacher" thread. It seems to be helping a lot of new/prospective students! If anyone wants a student's perspective, post your questions here! :)

Do you think Exeter does enough to prevent bullying? What my friend hates about Exeter is the Lord-of-the-Flies cruelty that sometimes seems to happen in an all-boys dorm. I think dorm life can be tough on some insecure, socially awkward guys. What’s your opinion? I’d love to know…

hmmmm…it’s kind of tough to say because I’m a girl, and I think girls’ dorms are different from guys’ dorms. I looooove my dorm and I feel really safe there.

I can say that in any case, the dorm faculty members are very attentive. If someone is being bullied, a proctor or faculty member will notice and the situation will be sorted out. If a student is really unhappy, they can move into a different dorm, although I’ve never heard of someone moving because of bullying.

The school takes bullying/hazing VERY seriously, and if it’s serious a student may be put up for a diciplinary case. Like I said, I don’t live in a boys dorm, but I haven’t really heard any complaints on campus. I really wouldn’t say that there’s any “Lord of the Flies cruelty”.

Sorry if that wasn’t much help…Do you have any specific examples? I may be able to help a bit more if I know where you’re questions are coming from.

Thanks for posting and I think it’s great that you’re helping like this. Sounds like you are having a good experience but unfortunately there will probably always be some kids who are considered uncool. My friend is very shy and feels shut out of the popular cliques. His roommate sounds like a real snob and my friend sometimes feels that other guys on the floor are laughing at him.

What do you like most about dorm life? Do you think there are any disadvantages to living away from home at such a young age?

How would you describe the type of people that attend Exeter?

In general, the type of people that attend Exeter are students that are willing to work hard and give up the more typical aspects of a high school experience in order to be in a more academically challenging environment. I would also say that my friends at school are more mature than most of my friends at home, because they have to know how to get things done without anyone else pushing them all the time.

Hi, I was wondering, on average, how much free time students at exeter get?

Just wanted to take a moment to say THANKS!
Even though I don’t have any questions (yet), this thread really helps! :)

we get a lot of free time, actually. for fall term this year, i’m looking about around at least 3 hours of free a day. it depends on each person’s schedule obviously, but there’s tons of time to do homework during the day, after dinner, and especially during the weekends.

^yup. sorry i haven’t been on in a while. i’ve been moving in. but yeah, your schedule starts at 8 am and ends at 6 pm monday, tuesday, wednesday, and friday, and you can have 2 to 4 hours of free time depending on your frees. it can also differ if you play a team sport.

what is there to do in town?
and
what if you do a sport and a club, then how much time do u have?

if you play a team sport instead of a club sport you have practice for about 1.5 - 2 hours on mondays, tuesdays, thursdays, and fridays, then you have games on wednesdays and saturdays. games take up a lot of time because of the trips to other schools. you can leave at one and not get back until six or even later depending on how far away the other school is. there are also home games which take up less time.

in our town we have a couple chinese restaurants, a thai restaurant, and some pizza places. there’s also an old movie theater and a couple of nicer places to eat. we have small shops but to tell you the truth there’s not much. most people spend free time on campus because there’s a lot to do here.

What do you/most people do in your free time? Are the weekends usually boring? I know they have dances and other activities but those don’t take up the whole day do they?

i do homework in my free time. so do most people on campus. there are also a whole bunch of clubs to keep us busy. sports take up a lot of free time, especially if you like to practice on your own. we also have quite a few people who are into music. some people almost live in the music building practicing their insturments. people don’t really go to the dances. the only ones that people attend are the formals (because they have fun getting dressed up and finding a date) and the first dance of the year, “back in black”. most dances are really casual though. to tell you the truth, most people will just hang out with friends if they have a free hour or two.

We have classes on more than half of the saturdays when we’re here. it is just a half day (8 - 12:35 with at least one free period), but if you’re on a team, then you’ll have a game when class is over. as i’ve mentioned, games can take up quite a bit of time. sundays are used for catching up/getting ahead on homework. It’s just hard to get bored when you have so much to do, and when you live with all your friends.

Thanks for taking the time to fill us in on all things Exeter. I’m so happy to hear all the positive stuff. My son just started there and I’m missing him a lot. I’m happy to hear you say how much you enjoy it and how busy you are. ( that must be why he’s not calling his mother!)

no problem :)

What’s the partying scene like?
What I never understood about boarding school students is how they’re able to do those typical teen things that adults don’t want them to do - drinking, drugs, sex - when it seems like you’re all confined to your school’s bubble.

the truth is most of the kids i know here have little to no desire to do those typical teen things for a few reasons. i think the main reason is that it just seems pointless. another very very very good reason not to drink or do drugs is that you can get kicked out of the school if you’re caught. i think most feel that it’s not worth the risk because it’s different when you go to a boarding school. at home if you get caught doing something wrong, you may get yelled at or punished by your parents. here, you get all that, plus the shame and stress that come with a dc case and the burden of knowing that you’ve probably messed up your future.

woah, that sucks a LOT. Like, more than I can fathom.

Alright I can understand sex, but why would you want to come to Exeter of all places if you just want to do drugs and drink? That seems pretty stupid
