Hello everyone! When I was applying to Exeter I also used this site, and always enjoyed when I could directly ask someone at Exeter, or any of the schools I applied to for that matter.

If you have a question, feel free to ask!

Hi Cutiedida, How was your Exeter experience thus far? Did Exeter meet your expectations? Can you please comment on dorm life, math and science classes, what you like best and don’t like about Exeter? Thanks.

thank you! this is something that i had been looking for a while.
do you think your relationship with a teacher or counselor is an important part of what exeter is looking for?
what are somethings to keep in mind while going through the application process?

can you please take the time to comment on my thread? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-chances/996771-chances-exeter.html

Thank you SO much.

How is the school? How hard is it adjusting to harkness? Do lots of people feel teribly homesick? Has it been easy for you to make friends and fit in? Hope you’re having a wonderful time and all the best!

Hello, Cutiedida.
Why did you choose Exeter? Can you tell me your opinion of the Art classes, Modern Languages classes, and/or Computer Science classes? What can you tell about the community at Exeter? Is it International-students friendly?

Thank you for your time!

I’m a new upper at Exeter so I can answer most of your questions.
How was your Exeter experience thus far? Did Exeter meet your expectations?

I have loved my Exeter experience so far. Its everything I imagined it to be.

Can you please comment on dorm life, math and science classes, what you like best and don’t like about Exeter?
I really like my dorm. Everyone is really nice and friendly. Today was academy life day so we went bowling as a dorm. It was so fun! I’m in a single so sometimes it can be lonely when I can’t find anyone to hang out with but I am very shy so I don’t go knocking on peoples doors like most people do. My room is pretty big and I have a walkin closest. I am in a transition math class so it is full of other new students. I really like my teacher. The class is easy so far but I’m sure it will get harder. I’m taking Marine Biology. My teacher is awesome! We already went on a little field trip to the river and on wednesday we are going to the ocean. I think I’m taking somewhat easy courses because I find that I have a lot more free time than most people. I have been getting enough sleep and I still find time to talk to my boyfriend back home on the phone for at least an hour a night. There are a few people who don’t like it here. Its not for everyone but it is definitly for me. :)

Hi xflippx3:

Am considering Exeter as a new Upper for next year. Sounds like it has been a great week or so for you. Has the transition been difficult…is it easy to meet people…sounds like the classes are amazing. If I can ask what lead you to Exeter as a Junior instead of either earlier or sticking it out where you were?

Thanks

I didn’t know about boarding schools before I was in tenth grade. When I researched them it really made me want to go to one. The first cupple days were the hardest because I didn’t know anyone. You can meet people really easy though. You just have to be outgoing. The first couple of days were awkward but now I have made a lot of friends.

Sorry! I have been swamped with homework!

Invent: Exeter has completely met my expectation so far! Though I was very homesick my first week, I am starting to feel in the right place. All my classes are amazing! I am taking Biology, which is super fun, and the Harkness method is great! Math is hard for me, since I am not really a word problem kind of girl, but I am improving. Dorm life is fun; parties, watching sunday night football in the common room, and eating easy mac! What I like best about Exeter is the relationships with people throughout the grades and also the faculty. What I don’t like is that Grill doesn’t sell gum!

calistudent: I think that Exeter really emphasizes relationships with your teachers. I already stay after class with a teacher is I need help, or just want to have a discussion. The admission advice I can give you is that YOU are not the only factor affecting your admission. Remember, they want diversity, and you may just have an unlucky year. I would encourage you to work hard and apply again if you are not admitted.

accioquote: Exeter is amazing! I love Harkness. It is really fun to actually look at how far you have come in your thinking without the teacher saying a word! I admit, I was pretty homesick for a couple of days, but I found a remedy: watching some TV with a bottle of soda. It is something so familiar, it makes it feel like home. I also have texting “conversations” with my mom while I am watching TV. I have made so many friends already, I never feel out of place. Of course, some people you will not like and some you will really like.

soraedo: I got into both Exeter and Andover and chose Exeter because it felt right. I liked the people I met, revisit was exactly what I was looking for. I don’t take a modern language, but all languages here are very well funded (I take Latin, though). I have not yet taken an art class nor have a taken Comp Sci, but I am taking Comp Sci in the winter, so I can tell you then. The community at Exeter is extremely international student friendly. I have a lot of international friends, and some of them I didn’t even know until they told me!

Have you joined Math, Science, Debate Clubs or Model UN? How many participate in each of these clubs? When and how often do you meet each week? For the math club, is there a faculty coach for competitions? Thanks.

mickeym, I am also a new upper at Exeter. To be honest, I have heard mixed reviews from other new uppers about entering as an upper. The biggest complaint is that most people at the school have already made friends, but there are really a lot of new people every year, including uppers and seniors. (And not all PG’s are recruited for sports). Also keep in mind that upper year is fairly difficult (it helps if you can get U.S. history out of the way before coming here), so don’t expect a whole lot of free time for socializing. That being said, I love Exeter. The classes might seem intimidating at first, but they are not really that bad if you put the work in, and the harder classes can be some of the most fun. I like that everything is within walking distance so it is easy to squeeze in a lot of clubs and sports. They have a lot of choices here!
I chose to apply to Exeter later because I didn’t know about it until 10th grade. Also, I mainly wanted a different school to go to so I wouldn’t be completely bored at public school for my last couple years of high school.

Musisat:

Thanks for the reply. What prompted you to apply…not being challenged enough at your previous school? What do you love about Exeter…class size, challenging classes, Harkness, social, extra-curricular activities, atmosphere?

Thanks

Yeah, I was running out of advanced classes at my old school and I wanted a challenge. That’s sure what I’m getting here. I like not having to be so concerned with grades, but more concerned with keeping up with the Harkness discussion and actually learning something because I worked hard to figure it out. And I sort of wanted to get away from home a bit early.

how hard is it to get in as a PG?

I am strongly considering going there for my junior year, but as it is boarding school and thus limits me from going to as many places ( i live in NYC with lots of roaming freedom) I want to know if there is rigerous enough math and science courses, so far the commenters here sound very weak in math, which is fine, but I want to make sure I get a superb education in math particularly Math Olympiad, will and can i get that here?

The amount of sports jocks in this school concerns me, please be honest, how many nerds are there? IS there much creativity? are the kids geniuses or not really???

Go on the website. The entire course catalog is available. Click the tab under academics, then departments, then mathematics. On the sidebar is a link to teaching materials. Take a peek at the problem sets and see what you think. These are the basic math courses that most students take. There are, of course, higher levels. The coach for the USMO team teaches at Exeter (Mr. Feng).

But PEA is much more than math and science. You will have to write a major research paper for US History as an 11th grader, as well as do a great amount of reading and analysis. The humanities courses are no walk in the park and they are all taught at a very high level,

(Oh, and I’m not a student; I’m a parent.)

If you decide to apply, good luck!

holden15: I don’t know much about PG’s, but I do know that getting in as a PG is VERY competitive. Basically, you need to be really smart, or very good at a sport and very smart. However, I encourage you to apply, because I have heard that being a PG is very rewarding.

shushugah: The math is very rigorous! You will not run out of classes. They even have classes in place for kids who get beyond their curriculum, where you can choose what you want to study further. We have very good program for the Math Olympiad. A lot of sports jocks? Haha most kids aren’t sports jocks; there are more then enough nerds here, as well as a good mix of normal kids. Some people here are “geniuses”, but everyone here is smart and as excepted for a reason, one of those reasons being competence (at least) in academics.

*accepted, not excepted (never mind me)

Thank you!! That really answers my question, I am also in serious need of financial aid, and I read on site they offer almost full scholarships, but hope that’s true, Really excited if i get in!!

in terms of atmosphere, I am very political, particularly liberal and have strong sense of free speech and being able to express my opinion and identity, I understand they may have BS restrictions, but I heard Andover has no dress code? and what about free time to do extra things like make videos? Write online blogs, as well as visit places?

The things I would be interested in doing are Debate, Model UN, Model Congress (if any), Mock Trial, Math Team, and research in Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science.

I am very well academically rounded student, would I have time for all of those passions? would I be able to get into courses to do all those things? I will be doing about 12 self study AP’s on my own,

here is my list of plans for this year alone. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/999819-i-am-dedicated-want-know-if-college-would-agree-not.html

Please take time to look at it, ultimately I wish to go to harvard or MIT provided I can afford it, and for Junior Year am already looking into RSI or Clarks Scholars program, so is exeter and or Andover going to be able to accomodate such grand goals? I am very willing to work hard and push myself beyond ordinary workloads.

I think that Exeter can support you in all of your goals. However, I would strongly caution you against such a rigorous high school career. There is a whole life ahead of you to have a flourishing career, and the last thing you want to do is burn ouy in high school. Also, setting such high standards for yourself (12 self study ap’s?) will only set you up for failure.

However, Exeter has amazing clubs, especially the ones you were talking about. I think that Exeter would be a great place where you could reach your goals.
