son is in Abbott …anyone know anything about Abbott!!!

Sorry, I spelled Abbot incorrectly!

@cdgni: As far as I know, there are several ways of defining international students for different purposes. In presenting the international student rate of enrollment, students with non US citizenship are counted as international, regardless their immigration status (e.g. green card holder) or where they currently reside. For international student orientation, they may invite non citizen students as well as citizens living abroad. As for financial aid purpose, I sense that the ones that file US tax return and the ones that don’t are two different categories. For admissions, I think fluency in English and experience in classes taught by English is an important consideration in determining whether the student is considered international.

@momtosportsfiend - how did you find out what dorm? We checked our mail today, but nothing yet! - thanks

matonh, we do not live far from Exeter so I suspect they mailed them yesterday as it arrived this morning in the mail. we drove up to Exeter this afternoon and were lucky enough to catch up with a very nice security guard who let us in to see the room! Very spacious for two, with 14-16 boys on his floor sharing what look to be two recently renovated (and clean!) bathrooms. Each closet had a good sized (not full length) mirror on the inside of the door. We didn’t get to see the common areas (the security guard told us later that they are on the third floor.) but there were two washer/dryer sets in the basement, which I didn’t expect. Now I wish I hadn’t paid for the laundry service! Abbot is centrally located and close to just about everything but the gym. Although he wouldn’t mind being in a dorm closer to the gym, my son is excited he can roll out of bed and have a 2 min walk to class.

Thanks momtosportsfiend! that’s very exciting. I can’t believe it’s only 17 days away.

matonh, are you an incoming prep as well?

My son will be a new lower.

does anyone know anything about lamont hall?

Falling behind, sorry I’m answering below some of the questions that haven’t been answered yet.

Most kids learn to regulate their sleep in a way that allows them to complete their work and live a reasonably healthy life. Study skills experts and your health teachers can also help you find balance in your life. As for homework, you typically take five classes that will give about 50 to 75 minutes of homework per day (each). Regarding relaxation, see posts above about weekends and evenings.

Most parents come on Friday, so they can observe their child in one or more of his/her classes. The Exeter Inn is probably the most popular place to stay, but it’s likely already booked for parents’ weekend.

For admission purposes, I believe it’s determined by where you live at the time when you apply, but I’m not sure; you should ask the Admission Office.

:) I believe it’s just swimming one length of the pool in any style, but I’m not sure. They’ll tell you once you get here. It’s nothing to be worried about.

Well, it looks like you already visited! Great location. Some great faculty living there. Nice size at about 30 kids. I’m sure your son will love it.

Another great mid-size dorm at about 30 girls. Some very nice faculty and central location.

What about Merrill Hall?

Nice! Right next to Wetherell dining hall, facing Main Street; you can (almost) go to breakfast in your pj’s. About 40 girls and three great faculty residents.

I’m seeing all sorts of… “interesting” posts about Exeter dorms, so let me say two things:

I would bet that if you polled the residents of each of Exeter’s 29 dorms, the vast majority of kids in each dorm would say that their dorm is the best and that they can’t imagine living in any of the other 28. And they’re right! The reality is that dorm life is one of the aspects of boarding school that kids enjoy the most. Whichever dorm you’re placed in becomes your home, and the home you fall in love with. This is good news: it tells you that there really is no such thing as “good dorms” and “bad dorms.” There’s only “your dorm” and “the other dorms.” Your dorm is the one you’ll most likely love. Occasionally kids change dorms, but this can happen in ANY dorm; it’s not going to happen because there’s something inherently “bad” about your dorm.

I don’t find statements about dorm “reputations” very helpful. One of the great things about Exeter is its diversity. No matter what dorm you live in, you’ll find a few kids who really love sports and are tri-varsity athletes; a few who are really into art; a few who are into math and sciences; and so on. Moreover, Exonians are typically respectful of (and seek out) people who are different from them; the tri-varsity athlete is unlikely to avoid you because you do club sports and are really into math (in fact, the tri-varsity athlete may well be really into math). No matter who you are, the chances that you’ll feel completely out of place in one dorm because everyone else is not like you are virtually zero. On top of that, keep in mind that about one third (not one fourth) of the students in each dorm are new every year, and dorm faculty also change fairly frequently (for a variety of reasons). Any reputations that might develop change very quickly. Bottom line: Forget about reputations. No matter who you are, if you got assigned to
, get ready to meet a very diverse group of dormmates and to fall in love with

The dorm and adviser assignment letter suggested going to Who’s Who in Lion Links to check on other students in the same dorms. We only see course info on my son’s Lion Links page. Is the Who’s Who link available yet for prep’s or other new students, or should we contact IT? Thanks

would anyone happen to know if merril hall’s flloors are carpeted?

I think the Who’s Who isn’t available yet. I can see it in my LionLinks, but if I search by dorm, I only see the faculty who live in the dorm, not the students. So my guess is that they’re still finalizing that. As for Merrill’s floors, sorry, I have no idea. Once the Who’s Who is on, you can e-mail one of the returning girls about it.

Do you know anything about Lamont?

Just to be the same as everyone else: do you know anything about Main Street Hall North?

Lamont: See previous page.

Main Street: Larger boys’ dorm with about 50 residents. A more modern structure than most of the other dorms; divided into North and South. It’s in the Northern part of the campus (closest to the Academy Center; farthest from the gym). Lots of dorm pride.

P.S. Looks like they just updated LionLinks, so you can now search by dorm and see the residents of each dorm.
