Today I got accepted at Exeter as an upper and I’m very exited and happy about it one question though: If I want to go to Exeter summer school do I need to reapply for the summer school or could I just ask in the admissions office if I can just get in without reapplying? Im sure requirements for the summer school are much easier and the pool much smaller so I don’t know if reapplying its necesary thank you so much for this thread it’s awesome!

Hey Upper Exonian, congrats! Summer School admission is separate from regular school Admission, so you probably would still need to apply. But it’s worth double-checking with the Summer School office and see if they might simplify the process for you. Give them a call.

About the free time thing,

as exonians, we usually have free time, and you’ll find yourself having more and more as you adapt to the new environment. It’s much more relaxed [workwise] than I had imagined… But don’t let your guard down still! Anyways, exeter is a great place and saturdays are to be looked forward to as well as sundays, and sometimes even wednesday afternoons!

Thanks I’ll give them a call :)

ahahaha i agreee!

@PEAteacher, do you know what laptop kids on FA generally get?
thanks.

I just asked my kid, and he said it’s about half and half Dells and Macs. The advantage of the Dell is that it’s easier to order and the whole thing–or close to the whole thing–is paid for. The advantage of the Mac is…it’s a Mac. But you’ll end up paying for about half of it.

K. thanks calssicalmama!
thats helpful

Dear PEA teacher -
my son got accepted to both the regular session for the coming fall as a lower and the summer session at Exeter (leadership program). We are not sure if it’d be a good idea for him to attend the summer session before the regular one. While I see some benefits, my biggest concern is that the school atmosphere during the summer would be too relaxed and different from a regular one that he may have wrong expectations and have difficulties adjusting to the regular school environment. What is your view on this - I don’t know who to seek advice from - any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Dear PEAteacher…
I would be interested in knowing what the chances of getting off of the waiting list are. Also, would being open to be a day student or a boarding student help my chances(instead of having to board/having to be a day student.)???

Thanks classicalmama re: laptops.

Wishboard, I would not worry about Summer School creating the “wrong expectations.” It’s certainly the case that the atmosphere and workload are much more relaxed. But as long as you know that going in, it’s not a problem. On the other hand, you do get a very good sense of what the rhythm of the day is, you learn your way around campus, you get a taste of dorm living, and so on. This can be useful. Many Exonians first got to know the school through Summer Schoool, and they’ve all made fine transitions. I think a better question might be whether you want your kid to be in summer school at all. He’s got a challenging year ahead of him, so he may want to use the summer to do something non-academic. I generally don’t think it’s a good idea for Exeter students to take classes in the summer. They really do need a break.

EternalTime, I generally don’t discuss admission issues, but I’ll say this: I understand that it’s frustrating to be placed on a waitlist. And it’s natural to want to do something to get off it. But, by and large, it’s up to the school to make that decision, and it’s impossible to predict “chances.” You should do what the Office tells you to do as far as signaling your interest in remaining on the waitlist, etc. But, otherwise, there’s no way to predict whether spaces will open up, how many will, who will be offered a spot, etc. Again, I know it’s hard, but probably the most one can say is that (1) waitlists are real and may result in offers of admissions, but (2) it’s essential that you explore other options for next year and, of course, start thinking about reapplying for fall 2012. Good luck!

Thank You for the advice. =)

Dear PEAteacher,
Could you please tell me if new-coming international uppers have single or double rooms? Do you they have an option of choosing either one?
And what about students (without FA) who bring their own laptops, are they going to be able to use them for classes?
Thank you!

Have a similar question to Yazmie’s, how is the rooming situation decided? i.e. do you randomly get assigned a single room or double room, or…?

The Dean of Students and the Dean of Residential Life make rooming assignments based on the information in your application (not really randomly). Most new students are placed in doubles, but quite a few do get singles. If you feel strongly one way or the other, you can e-mail the Dean of Students early in the summer and request a single or double. The Deans face many constraints when placing students into rooms (including the fact that returning students pick their rooms first), so nothing can be guaranteed, but they will do their best to honor your request.

Regarding laptops, yes, you can certainly bring your own. Typically you would not use a laptop during class. Laptops don’t really work with the Harkness sytem (you’re having a discussion with your classmates, not taking notes while a teacher talks). But you will use it to do your work, write papers, etc.

Thank you for taking time during your break to answer questions.

My D is very involved in Tae Kwon Do. Do you know anything about PEA’s martial arts club? Someone on another thread said it may be an inactive club.

Hmmmm… I know that there’s a western martial arts club (which, to me, looks like kids waving long swords…), but I’m not sure about non-western martial arts. If you look at the description of the club on the Exeter website, it’ll list the name of the adviser and his/her e-mail address; don’t hesitate to get in touch with him/her and ask for more info.

Regarding the rooming situation- as an incoming upper when is the appropriate time to request singles. I love having friends but i usually cannot concentrate with doubles and really would like a single

I would do it in May. Housing assignments aren’t made until summer.

Laptops - I’m pretty sure you can get whatever kind of laptop that you want. I got a Toshiba with the FA. If it’s not a Dell, then you have to buy it and wait to be reimbursed.

Housing - For those of you who are incoming uppers, there is a pretty good chance that you will be placed in a house (around 10-20 people), so if you want to be in a bigger dorm, you should request that too.
